The BBC Must Cut its Ties to ‘Agents of The Conservative Party’ if it Wants to Survive

  1. It can only do that if Labour win, because if they try that at this current moment the Tories will unceremoniously put down the BBC or better still for them flog it to the Daily Mail.

    Edit: typos

  2. It always makes me laugh: both the Left and the Right always accuse the BBC being an agent for the “other side”.

Edit: why am I being downvoted? I’m literally just telling you my experience based on previous Reddit threads.

  3. Ah yes, the BBC *must* cut *its* ties to the Goverment that tied it up in the first place and is currently denying it the right to own scissors.

  4. I’m starting to wonder if it’s worth keeping the BBC around at all. Certainly as a news outlet. We’ve got a whole ecosystem of media outlets willing to act as mouthpieces for the regime, do we really need a formal one? What practical use do we have for a state news broadcaster, when it takes active, continuous effort that we clearly aren’t willing/able to expend, to keep them from degenerating into mouthpieces for the regime?

Maybe the BBC needs to move onto exclusively being for entertainment and non-political stuff? Seems like the only way to have a state broadcaster that’s not morally hazardous.

Just to be clear, this is more of a thinking-out-loud comment than one prescribing an exact solution. I don’t have any strong love or hate of the BBC (except when it’s actively putting it’s thumb on the scale for the Tories), but I think change is needed in how it operates somewhere at the very least, and I acknowledge I know nowhere near enough about how media organisations on that scale work to prescribe an exact model.

  5. It needs to stop being a flaccid cock and get a giant raging boner for the news again rather than being mayonnaise custard cream biscuit surrender monkeys for the tories.

  6. It is probably fair to say that the BBC was screwed either way.

If they refused to be infiltrated, taken over and used as a Tory mouthpiece the Conservatives would have strangled them to death by doing away with the licence fee.

Alternatively by accepting all that they’ve pretty much alienated most of those who would have been the BBC’s staunchest supporters.

Frankly though I’d have had more respect for the BBC if they’d chosen to go down fighting. By choosing survival over integrity they’ve become an active part of the problem.

In many ways what makes what has happened to the BBC so particularly dangerous is that their old reputation was so much one of integrity and quality. (Albeit tilted in favour of the establishment and the government of the day, occasionally rather badly). Most are rightly skeptical of news sources like Sputnik, Fox etc. but a hell of a lot of people in the U.K. *even now* persist in credulously assuming that the balance of BBC bees and current affairs content is still what it used to be and that it can be trusted. It’s that trust that makes it so dangerous.

  7. I think it’s too late to be honest, the damage is already done.

A lot of people witnessed first hand the impartial reporting back at the last GE with Corbyn, by the time the pandemic and the clusterfuck government came around with scandal after scandal that the BBC refused to report on it became very obvious the BBC isn’t impartial nor has it been for a long time.

When you factor in young people streaming and not paying TV licenses as well as the average content the BBC put out you struggle to see how they will survive older generations dying off.

  8. The left wingers complaining that it’s too right wing

The right wingers complain that it’s too left wing.

I think that means it’s perfectly balanced where it is?
    .

  9. I mean, everyone on every side of the political Isle complains the BCC is on the far opposite side of their viewpoints.

I hear just as many people saying the BBC is far right.

I think it’s fair to say the BBC is done for, as no one is haply with the service.

  10. It can’t because any thing it broadcasts that the Tories think is anti Tory the government threatens to withhold or cut their funding. Ots not the beeb that’s the problem it’s this right wing lunatic government that will not let itself be questioned or held up for scrutiny by a broadcast er that it thinks is paid by public money. It is In a way through the license fee we all pay but its not funded by the government but the government does ser the fee so if it doesn’t like what they’re saying they stop the money by freezing their income. Up until recently the beeb has been fairly neutral but since mad Boris and the ERG loney tunes took over the beeb is at the mercy of the radical right

  11. as the BBCs funding is protected by law – which could be changed ill grant – it should have been able to be immune from political bias, i agree that it should have balanced reporting but not unbalanced balanced reporting, EG there were 10 voices saying Berxit would be a calamity and one voice saying it was the only way forward – but the Beeb decided to represent them as 1 to 1.

this was/is the problem, they aren’t being proportionate.

which i expect to see repeated as the voices to criminalise abortion start getting louder.

I would stop paying the licence fee today if it wasn’t law, the Beeb isnt behaving in a way its privileged funding could allow it to, if it decides to continue with over representing nut jobs then we may as well have fox vs cnn equivalents over here too.
