The irrational fear Irish people have of using the credit card

  1. I’d never want a credit card.

If I needed something badly I’d perfer to get a small loan and pay it for it that way, or else go without and at the moment I’m going without.

  2. You’d almost think a lot of people in this country are still feeling the effects of a time when credit was rampant in the country.

  3. Given the shenanigans of the last boom, I’d say there’s an entire generation who have a healthy fear of using it.

  4. Tbf I think too many people view credit cards as an additional emergency cash reserve and not an instant access loan with a *very* high interest rate

  5. We don’t have the same lucrative rewards like cash back and airmiles for credit card usage like some countries do. There’s also no building of credit scores or credit history like you need in the USA.

Add in the fact that the government charges tax to have a credit card, and most peole don’t see a need for it.

  6. Is credit score big in Ireland when looking to get a mortgage? And besides owning a credit card how else would you get a good credit score?

  7. Credit card holder here…

I’ve a 5K limit. I curse the feckin thing. I’m like Bono, can’t live with or without it. It’s gotten me out of some scrapes but it’s also a semi-permanent debt cycle. I owe about 2,600 at present. When I get it below 2 I’m going to reduce the limit to 3,000.

  8. Do you guys not use credit cards for the travel/driver insurance on holidays, air line points (Aer Lingus), or cash back? I see BOI and Avant have some rewards

  9. I use my BOI credit card instead of my debit card. Pay the full statement off every month. Get between 500-750 Avios points to spend on Aer Lingus or BA, get travel insurance and 2 return European flights a year with Aer Lingus.

I think it’s great and suits me spending like that

  10. It’s not irrational, its a system that can easily be skewed in company’s favour. Why use it at all??? Its encourages people to view short term rather than long term picture
