Britain’s archipelago of shame | The UK’s treatment of Chagossians doesn’t amount to a crime against humanity

  1. The Critic is drivel. It’s a more posh version of The Sun. Or a version of Tatler that’s dedicated to right-wing ranting.

  2. This is bollocks – it conflates Diego Garcia as being part of Mauritius, whereas in reality they were always separate.

Diego Garcia was merged into Mauritius’ territory a couple of years before Mauritius was granted independence specifically so that Mauritius could sell it back to the UK – that was part of the deal “we need you to do this, and won’t oppose or hamper Mauritian independence as long as you go along with it.”

In reality Diego Garcia was a separate nation (or “proto-nation” or something, if you prefer) and the two always had separate identities.
