Recently acquired this silver bowl by NM Thune. It’s purity, mark and enamel work point towards it being made from 1910-1930.

Does anyone recognize the very odd subject of the bird and child on the enamel work? Not familiar with this folktale in my readings of Asbjørnsen and Moe haha.

  1. I’m not an expert, but I have come across NM Thune products before in some historical research relating to their collaboration with Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik. It looks almost like a Gerd Preston work from the 1960’s, but if you are sure it is from pre-WW2 it is probably a work by Haakon Jacobsen, he was the company’s lead designer from the mid twenties to after WW2, and showed great interest in the use of enamel in silverwork, eventually making it a company signature product towards the end of his career. I haven’t seen any examples of it before so I can’t say for sure, but checking the Norwegian lexicon’s summary of his career it says he produced a series of art deco enameled tea kits for the company in the 1930’s, could be this piece comes from such a kit.
