Asylum claim rejections show the UK government has little understanding of what people are fleeing – and it’s costing lives

  1. In all seriousness, I think what gets people so frustrated with this situation is that the place that asylum seekers seem to be fleeing in droves is France.

I get that migrants are likely to have a better grasp of English than any other European language, and I know that a lot of places throughout the world traditionally see the United Kingdom as the best place to come to (although who in earth knows why anymore!), but how does this make risking your life and potentially the lives of your family to get to the UK instead of just claiming asylum in France worthwhile!?

There are of course other reasons why it would be preferable to claim asylum in the UK rather than France, such as having family connections in the UK already, and the fact that it is not possible to claim asylum in the UK from France is the real scandal here.

However, people risking their lives and the lives of others and enriching criminal people smugglers just because they would prefer to resettle in the UK rather than France seems selfish rather than desperate.

  2. *fleeing through dozens of perfectly safe countries they could also claim asylum in

I’d have a lot more sympathy if we bordered or even close to bordered the countries they’re leaving and they didn’t “flee” through literally some of the safest countries in the world to try get here

A large proportion of the time they’re economic migrants just entering through illegal means and then claiming asylum

  3. Lol no one understands what they are fleeing; they’re passing through multiple safe countries to get here.

  4. Good article on what Albanians are escaping from:

    https://www.openaccessgovernment.org/vilification-albanian-migrants-refugee-asylum-crime-trafficking/147925/

Mainly trafficking and exploitation, grooming for sex or criminal activities, indentured servitude is also common, blood feuds which by the sound of it are very similar to what we hear in Italian mafia stories, extremely poor living conditions.

They live in what sounds like an extremely poorly regulated country where women, children and young men are all exposed to the above.

  5. Thank God Oliver Cromwell didn’t say “Feck this. I’m off to claim asylum elsewhere”.

Some of these countries need a civil war or a revolution. Instead the young men are leaving.

Plus civil wars are unacceptable in the modern world, although change needs to come from within.
