I originally posted this on r/MapPorn but thought you guys over here might be interested too. Historical Irish Rail GIS. This map shows the Ireland’s Historical and Modern Rail and Tramlines with POI extracted from NIAH and NIEA data (more data for ROI needs to be added in terms of buildings)

It’s backwards we have gone with public transport
Well at least the brits got something right, even if it was to extract our natural resources
Ok it’s easy to see what a failure it was to close so many lines now but Ireland was impoverished as a Free State and then Republic while it was assumed that the car was the future of transit from the 60s on.
A lot of this is something like bord na mona bog railways in terms of speed and comfort and so would’ve never been viable. Though it’s damning how much of our current rail network is a Victorian hand-me-down.
We used to have branch lines. Sob. So much progress reversed by the dull, talentless cunts who did so much damage to our infrastructure back in the 20’s and 30’s.
As a fan of board games, I’d love a Ticket to Ride special edition with this map
Out of curiosity, is there an interactive version of this, would love to zoom in to see the exact stations.
The north’s train lines seemed to be the best, now only 4 of Ulster’s 9 counties have trains, shows the damage partition done in those areas too.
Irelands greenway system
I like that the Listowel-Ballybunion monorail is on there
Why is the stop density all bonkers up north?
What are the dots in Kilkenny and one on Waterford not on tracks?
😍
Is there a higher quality image?
