So it fucking should be. It’s horrendous to put these gentle creatures through this for our entertainment. It’s not even a popular ‘sport’ anymore just something for people to gamble on.
I say this as my ex racer is sleeping next to me on my bed.
When COVID came, they simply threw the dogs out. These beautiful animals aren’t socialised with other dogs, they aren’t taught to walk on a lead properly, they cannot do anything a normal dog does. They feed them like shit and run them for up to 4/6 years which destroys their body and mind – yes, they get PTSD from their racing career.
Some defenders will tell me the breed will die out, to which I say if it means no more cruelty at the track so be it. The Romans had these dogs, painted them on vases and things like that. They are quite possibly the only dog mentioned in the Bible, and there is a painting of one from the 1600s that looks identical to my dog today. Find me another dog breed that has gone unchanged this long.
The tech is there to virtualise it just do that rather than have the cruelty and neglected old race dogs. In fact just get the dog handlers and owners to race anonymously on xbox or something .
*New* South Wales in Aus banned it once then reversed it due to commercial pressures.
I didn’t realise there was enough room inside a whale for that carry on.
Cruel sport that treats the dogs like a disposable product.
There’s gonna be a lot of mysteriously ‘sick’ greyhounds after the ban comes into force. Don’t think even for a second that Greyhound racers give a toss about their dogs. If they aren’t useful, they get put down.
There was a family friend of mine (he’s dead now, sadly) that rescued ex-racing greyhounds. He went on holiday, put the dog in at the greyhound kennels for a week, came back, found out the kennel had just euthanised his dog and not told him. Oh yeah, apparently the dog got sick, so instead of, you know, just taking the dog to the vet, they killed it. They didn’t treat his dog like a living being, they treated it as a bit of defective merchandise.
Any industry that involves making money from animal prowess is cruel.
Any industry involving animals is cruel because we struggle to have empathy for animals.
They are, as God put it in Genesis 9:3 first and foremost our food. Secondly they are our sport. Thirdly, they are our hobby and fourthly they have their own lives.
It should be, see plenty of adopted, retired racing Greyhounds in park and the issues they have due to them been in that sport etc shows it should be gone.
Hope dog/cat shows and their associated fucked up breeding practices will follow.
It is a bit mean to make them run up and down hills in the rain.
