
I saw these before hearing anything about kukeri festival at all and when I looked into it I realised the festival is also enjoyed in countries like Romania, Spain, Hungary… so I wanted the answer to my question even more. So my question is: Is kukeri festival in general pagan originated?

Short answer- it is. It’s older than christianity. Actually it’s an ancient ritual, meant to ward off evil spirits and bring prosperity. Historians trace its origins to the cult of Dionysos and the thracians. Greetings 🙂

Funny fact, the same type of festival can be seen in Austria as well. For example in the Gastein Valley. I have no idea what the exact history is there…but it’s interesting how a lot of people in Europe have the same type of festival.
