  1. Nowadays value is just 10 euros. But back in the day, those 2000$ were enough to buy things that today you’ll have to pay maybe 40-45€!

And nice catch btw, that one is in great condition.

  2. Hey there. Fellow portuguese banknote/coin collector here. You got a good one there, very beautiful note that one. That’s 10€ now, but when I used it, when I was a kid, it’s “value” was so much more. I can’t tell you something I could buy, but with that kind of money you were a king at school 🙂

  3. when I was a kid that was a construction work day salary. when I was a teenager (~ 1995/1996) that was enough to go eat a pizza, go to cinema with popcorn and a soda, have a couple of beers and the exchange was enough for next morning breakfast at the bakery

  4. These bank notes were beautiful. I still have my favourite: 100$ with the image of the poet Fernando Pessoa.

Nowadays euro notes seem like monopoly notes.

  5. That Bank note was my monthly allowance as a kid. Each school meal was around 100 escudos. So 2 contos would be enough for me to eat the whole month at school.

Btw. The man pictured in the bill it’s Bartolomeu Dias.
The Captain that found a way around the Good Hope cape, and thus, the first European to reach the Indian Ocean by sea.

  6. This one and the 5000 it was the equivalent of being the king of the streets.
I was a kid and i could buy anything i want.

  7. 25/30 years ago with one of those (2000$ /10€) you could buy snacks in school, play snooker and matraquilhos for one month ! nowdays you need 100€ to do the same…

  8. With half of that you could go to the cinema ten eat a happy meal. Back when titanic was launched.

Edit! The movie, not the boat XD

  9. that’s 2000 Escudos, or 2 Contos. Direct conversion by the time of transition (early 2000s) that’s roughly 10€.

if you go back enough in time, people used to buy houses for 50000 Esc.
people would earn 500 Esc monthly.

But you have to go back like 80 years for that

  10. 20 years ago, right before the euro, that was the standard entrance fee at the club I used to go to (Paradise Garage, or just Garage for short). It entitled you to 4 beers or 2 liquor drinks. Fun times.

  11. 2000 escudos. 2 contos. 10 euros. Back then it was enough for a full week vacation in the Algarve. Now you can’t even pay two McDonalds menus with it.
