  1. It’s a very harmless thing, children dressing up as kings and collecting donations for poor children in need.

  2. Finland and Sweden do a similar thing. Probably based on the same religious legend about the king herodes, wise men and the king of the moors or whatever it was. Its kinda cute, theres a whole song and everything.

Not all costumes are derived from American history and its problems.

  3. Wait till you find out about *”Morčić”* in Rijeka and Kvarner region of Croatia.

It’s first and foremost a [jewelry/lucky charm](https://www.zlatarna-jozef-gjoni.hr/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/prsten30b.jpg) and a symbol of Rijeka, but it’s also a [traditional mask](https://www.tportal.hr/media/thumbnail/w1000/1286198.png) worn during Rijeka carneval.

Here’s [the short origin story](https://croatia.hr/en-gb/culture-and-arts/legends/the-origin-of-morcic-the-lucky-charm-from-rijeka) behind it.

Interestingly, it was banned from “The Winter Show” art fair in New York 2 years ago, yet it’s still going strong in Rijeka. We’ll see for how long, hopefully it won’t be devoured by galloping political correctness.

  4. Don’t tell anybody!!

Somebody Will be offended and try to get rid of it, just like they did with our zwarte Piet

  5. Damn, Americans can’t keep their racists in check and now it’s all our problem. You’ve got to realise that blackface in Europe is usually not done to mock people of African descent.
What were they supposed to do? Put a white kid? Then you would rant about whitewashing.

  6. We never owned slaves, we were one. Now we need to feel bad for things Germanic people did too? In the USA of course blackface isn’t acceptable, when you literally have slavery not long time ago. It is not mocking, it is literally as harmless as it looks here.

  7. I think the main question to ask for these situations is whether the action is considered racist due to some local historical reason or if it is only being considered racist because of the cultural juggernaut that the United States has become where things across the globe are increasingly being seen through the lens of American history.
