Dismantling Sellafield: the epic task of shutting down a nuclear site

  1. From article:

“In 1954, Lewis Strauss, the chair of the US Atomic Energy Commission, predicted that nuclear energy would make electricity “too cheap to meter”. That forecast has aged poorly. The main reason power companies and governments aren’t keener on nuclear power is not that activists are holding them back or that uranium is difficult to find, but that producing it safely is just proving too expensive.”

    From the article-

“Dealing with all the radioactive waste left on site is a slow-motion race against time, which will last so long that even the grandchildren of those working on site will not see its end. The process will cost at least £121bn.”

    – Given the advances in renewables technology you’d think it would be a better investment than a repeat of this.

Considering the (idiot) govt had to be admonished for engaging with Chinese businesses to build nuclear facilities in the UK – nuclear is unsafe on multiple levels.

Edit: for those downvoting this last comment its about national security……

    From The Guardian 25/9/21

“Washington has been leaning heavily on Westminster to remove China from Britain’s nuclear power plans, blacklisting CGN, citing fears over national security and accusing it of stealing military technology – claims it denies. The former US secretary of state Mike Pompeo last year urged Britain to choose sides in the battle to develop nuclear technology, saying it “stands ready to assist our friends in the UK with any needs they have”.”

Considering the impact of the Russian invasion of Ukraine it’s a very valid point who is in charge of the UK’s energy security.

  2. I’m not anti-nuclear, however in the case of Sellafield we were bombarded with propaganda relating to how rigorously safe it was, but it now seems obvious that parts of the operation are/were chaotic and we’ve been left with a dangerous mess to sort out.
In the current drive for nuclear power, we are again being show propaganda about the inherent safety of nuclear power. etc.

  3. See, if people would just accept that [“low” doses of radiation are harmless](https://ans.org/pi/ps/docs/ps41.pdf) and unless your hair is actually catching fire, there is nothing to worry about, then it would be a whole lot easier of cheaper.

They could just hire a few lads to knock the place over and dump the waste in a convenient unlicensed tip. Job done. /s
