A *total* of 241 dogs were reported stolen in Ireland in 2020. This guy claims it’s 200 per week. Bollocks.
> Mr Kenny estimates that up to 48,000 dogs are stolen from Irish homes every year,
So he thinks over 10% of all Irish dogs are stolen every year?? Doesn’t sound believable at all.
200 a week or 48,000 a year? They pretty bad at maths.
Also this article is absolute horseshit from start to finish.
And puppy farms sound like such a happy place…
Dogs should be enshrined under law as family members. On a personal level the scumbags robbing them should be on the end of a barrel, you try to steal a family member you get shot in the face.
>Mr Kenny said many dogs that are lifted in Ireland are stolen to order for illegal breeding centres in Wales and Scotland.
>The UK has stricter breeding regulations, too, while Ireland is still the puppy farm capital of Europe.
If Ireland is the puppy breeding capital of Europe, why are they stealing the dogs for breeders in Scotland and Wales? Surely they’d just… breed them here?
The amount he’s saying are stolen is wildly inflated, but sadly we’re still the puppy farm capital of Europe. My dad got lost during lockdown on his bike and ended up knocking on a door for directions and could hear dozens of dogs howling and barking in the back. It’s a pure money scheme, I feel so bad for them!
Because stealing a dog in ireland is treated by law as just theft of a piece of property.
It should include animal cruelty charges as well as special status for theft of animals.
As the old joke goes:
“Unfortunately that’s the law and there’s nothing we can do” says lawmaker.
Those puppy farms are vile
There are far too many puppy farms in Ireland…that is true. My dog is a rescue from one of them. She was kept in a box for a couple of years giving birth over and over. The rescue had her for two months, she had vet treatments etc. and was still bald, skinny and traumatised when we got her. Now she’s a healthy weight, perfect fur etc. but costs €150 per month in medication. These puppy farms need to be closed down, and if this article makes even one person a bit more careful with their dog…and stops that dog being stolen for breeding, then it’s worth reading.
What could I do if I spotted someone in my backyard trying to steal my puppy?
Like could I belt them over the head with a 3 iron? Genuinely?
this makes me more depressed than most things
stop buying dags please folks 😭
200 a week. Hmm 🤔
Why does anyone ever buy from a breeder? There are tonnes of dogs in need of a home in shelters.
Ireland has a massive problem with puppy farms. There is no denying that but there is no way 200 dogs a week are robbed. I don’t doubt that a string of robberies could happen making it look much worse overall though. Also in most of these cases the dog stolen is left in the garden. Don’t leave your dog in the garden.
I was going to call bullshit on the figures but they’re not from the Gardaí, they’re from a pet detective so there might be some truth to them.
If only people weren’t more than willing to pay stupid money for dogs. This shit is too profitable for the breeders to stop
Look, it’s a culture……boss
Harsher penalties to deter the dodgy breeders.
Neuter the bastards.
*cough* nackers *cough*
We were a bit stupid about getting our first dog because my parents went onto DoneDeal of all places (I was 8 at the time). Of course she’s from a puppy farm and I feel terrible for her and whoever her parents and siblings are. She was completely covered in ticks when we got her which most likely means she was kept somewhere terrible and not looked after. She didn’t even cry when we took her home. I don’t regret getting her only because I love her to bits and couldn’t imagine life when she’s gone (she’s still alive but old now) but we learned the hard way to have some cop on for the future and not give another cent to those scumbags
The numbers are off but the vast majority of puppies bought in this country are from puppy farms even if the buyer doesn’t know it. It’s such a lucrative scam that some will go above and beyond and fool people who actively research and try to do the right thing. It’s such a good grift in part because they can get you attached to a puppy so easily (even if they are totally fabricating a puppy and just throwing you a random one eventually.) and once that happens they don’t even really have to try anymore because most people, even if they realise at that point it’s a fraud, will go through even just to “save” the puppy they have gotten attached to. That’s just the small amount who care and have researched enough to even get to that point.
Most people don’t realise that buying a puppy ethically takes months because you are on a waiting list and have to wait for the dam to get pregnant and you get throughly checked. Contrary to what a lot of people will anecdotally tell you getting a dog from a rescue is a much faster process with less checks than going to an ethical breeder. Also interestingly most legit breeders I see usually charge far less than these puppy mills do now so it’s not something you can just buy off the bat. It’s actually how a lot of the better running scams become so successful, people assume if they are spending 3000 on a puppy it will be a better cared for and bred puppy than one they get for 600 or from a rescue.
All this to say: Don’t buy a puppy on an impulse, do your research and get out at even ONE red flag before you get roped in. It’s a living being you’ll commit to for the entirety of its life span of over a decade. Even if you don’t care about the ethics trust me when I say it’s not worth the gamble the truly heartbreaking and hugely expensive health issues you can get with puppy farm dogs.

But we’re a nation of animal lovers!
There’s a string tied to my gate!
Wonder how many natured dogs they steal.
“Robert Kenny, Ireland’s only fully-qualified pet detective. ”
All righty then
Absolute *horseshit*, based on the unsubstantiated word of someone with a commercial interest in fear.
