UK MPs defend accepting ‘lavish’ Qatari gifts before World Cup

  1. This is why Qatar wanted the World Cup to begin with though. It was a huge networking event for them, at least after the sportwashing failed in response to the migrant deaths and issues with LGBT fans. The Qataris wanted to influence companies and politicians through gifts and advertising to increase their relevance compared to other Middle Eastern nations. The fact that we and other countries are looking to Qatar for natural gas now shows how well it is working.

  2. Interesting defences.

    > He cited Nelson Mandela’s words that “sport can change the world”

Yeah sometimes for the better sometimes for the worse. Does that excuse the 9k you had as gifts?

    > “Many of the people who have voiced opinions on this issue should also focus their energies on the handling of LGBT issues in professional football in the U.K.”

Mundell who took 7k goes for the classic *’no you’*

    > Doyle-Price said: “It is precisely to challenge them on their human rights record that we go on these trips

Okay. Then publish how you how challenged them. Every single MP on thar list.

  3. Slightly funny anecdote, my work have just released their bribery policy and all I was thinking about when going through it was how clearly the UK Bribery Act does not apply to MPs

  4. > Lisa Cameron, an SNP MP who is another vice-chair of the Qatar APPG, said that “understanding of [mental health issues] is progressing right across the world, including in Qatar.” She made one visit this year worth £3,865.

    > In total, 36 MPs have accepted the hospitality of the Qatari government since October last year, with three MPs receiving benefits worth more than £13,000 each. The average trip was worth £5,922.70.

Even the much insulated SNP are in on this gravy train. If MPs can’t see what’s wrong with getting brown bags full of dollar bills from dodgy middle-eastern regimes then they are shameful excuses for people.

  5. Disgraceful. Every one should be named and shamed and it should be plastered across the national papers.

  6. Didn’t a Greek MEP get striped of the EU vice-presidency for accepting ‘lavish’ gifts from the Qatari government?

  7. Course they defend themselves, they’re not gonna bloody hold their hand up to taking absolute massive back handers left and right to let a fascist slave government host the World Cup are they lmao.

    Tl;dr footy still for nonces

  8. Everyday there is a story about government corruption and everyday it just gets swiftly swept under the rug and no one does anything about it…until its big enough to effect the parties reputation that is or if someone wants their job in their own party. Corrupt backstabbers… what do we expect?

  9. Why do I have to take a yearly online test to make sure I understand what a bribe is and basically not accept anything. Yet these guys, who are in a position of trust, and get paid well are just on the take and open for anything they can get.

  10. I don’t follow football at all so I’m curious about whether the sub thinks that hosting the World Cup has ultimately backfired on Qatar or whether they would do it again next time, given half a chance?

  11. Well, at least we know the price of bribing MPs for/against a single cause.

Anyone knows how much money will make them care about the cost of living crisis for peasants?

  12. When is a gift a gift, and when is it a bribe? Hopefully HMRC will be charging MPs tax on these gifts.

I believe bribes are tax free.

  13. Defend against what, its not like anything’s going to happen to them, if I were them I’d just shrug my shoulders and say, yeah, I lived it up, what are you going to do about it?

  14. So that they wouldn’t point out the obvious cheating from the Brazilian officiating? Didn’t hear one thing from an MP talking about the ref so this now makes sense!

  15. Benefits are bestowed on underprivileged as in benefit system in UK. Surely, we are all poor as compared to Watari government.

  16. The difference between a bribe and benefit is your economic status. They are the same. It’s a play on words. They just took bribes.

  17. The difference between Britain and the European Union is that MEPs would be arrested and charged with corruption in this case.

  18. I’ve worked in a few govt departments in my time and there’s always strict anti-bribery policy, to the point accepting a tub of celebrations or a tea caddie from subbies at Christmas is a big no no. How can an MP even begin to defend accepting what’s described as ‘lavish’ gifts from *anyone*. Absolutely rotten to the core.

  19. MEPs have also been found guilty of this across euorpe. It seems everyone has sold another piece of their soul

  20. What is this article? 13k is fuck all. Barely a first class return ticket to Qatar. There may well be bribery and corruption, but 13k ain’t it.
