There were people who didn’t want to turn their lights off because it inconvenienced them.
They didn’t last too long.
As far as I can see non-compliance is the ONLY way off this dumb-ass merry-go-round of variants restrictions and vaccines. If anyone can see a viable alternative I am all ears.
A reasoned, constructive, and helpful analysis of the myriad factors underlying the debates around mask wearing. Not.
There were anti-maskers during the blitz. You could get fined for not having a gas mask – people would just carry the box around and use it to hold their lunch.
Impressive, an entire article predicated on a strawman.
Has the guardian still not learned that insulting political opponents is not a successful way of getting their point across?
Yeah there’s a weird overlap between anti-maskers and people who think they’re nationalists protecting the interests of their country, willing to die for their beliefs but are afraid of a needle or a mask to prevent exhaling virus particles.
I’m not a fan of masks, simply in terms of the sensory experience of them, but I appreciate that they are a tool in the current climate and will adhere to wearing them while required.
Being “anti-mask”seems odd to me, but I feel its odd that on the other extreme people have literally committed (at least in easy text commitments) to permanently wear them, and I find these comments strange as well.
Like really? In 10 years time you’re still going to be patting your pockets down to see if you’ve got it when going to Morrisons or for a 10 minute bus ride? Give me a break.
One of the things where I’m happy to just be a little woman in the middle ground doing my thing. Hyberbole on either side just seems odd to me.
Not the best analogy to use considering the rampet crime that was committed during the Blitz.
We have built this false truth where everybody was brave, stoic and honest during the blitz, the truth is very different.
I’m fed up of the anti-mask babies too. They are shocked that scientist haven’t magically cured disease because it inconveniences them. Constantly having to debate basic truths rather than getting actual shit done.
I’m not turning off my lights it’s just a government plot to remove our liberties!
Oh boy, WW2 comparisons to a thing not remotely like WW2!
Before anyone makes any further generalisations about a time period they weren’t alive to experience, I highly recommend that you all go and read “The Bombing War” by Richard Overy. It is a fascinating piece on the topic of the air war, how the government knew it was coming and why their interventions to protect civilians were ultimately harmful and counterproductive.
Before the 40s, the British government wargamed a number of scenarios in a heavy air war, including the bombing of civilians to cause mass death and demoralisation, and came to the conclusion that attempts to protect them were simply too costly. Instead, they provided a number of shitty half solutions that did little to help anyone. Those corrugated shelters you’re all familiar with flooded with rain and collapsed in people’s gardens so those with cellars used them instead. Evaucees were cruelly seperated from their siblings and sent to live with country nobles who were delighted to have indentured servants again, and ultimately most of the evacuees returned home, making the whole thing pointless and needlessly damaging children for no reason.
As for the blackout, it was a wholly unecessary crippling of life. German bombers had all the tools they needed to determine where they were, and in contrast to the belief of some exceptional individuals in this thread they didn’t even *have* the ability to target random buildings with exposed windows, their free fall bombs weren’t that accurate. All it did was lead to an increase in crime and accidents. In a truly hysterical repeat of events, government officials frequently and often ignored the blackout laws, stating that they were too important to obey such things.
Ultimatley, beyond not being a collaborator there wasn’t really much you the average citizen could do to aid the war effort, it depended wholly on our government making the right international decisions and Hitler biting off more than he could chew wrt the soviets.
I find it quite amusing that you lot think insulting people that don’t want to engage in nonsense health theatre is the way to go. It’s a little bit pathetic, we get it -you’re hypochondriacs and you want to drag us down to your oversensitive nervous level. The rest of us are just gonna get on with our lives.
Also FWIW, since it’s now the law and I’m not going to fake a disability because I’m not a terrible person, I’m now back to wearing a mask on transport and in shops. I do think it’s fucking ridiculous though and these obnoxious tirades aren’t going to change that.
Oh look, another /r/UnitedKingdom mask wank thread. Some things never change.
How about the guardian, and all the other red tops stop putting out utterly toxic divisive crap. Lets not go the way they have across the pond.
Why is everything compared to ww2, this country is fucked
Oh no, I wouldn’t have lasted a second during the blitz. Thankfully, I don’t base my self worth on comparing myself to ancient history.
Let’s also not pretend that coronavirus compares to the deadliest war in human history, so…
The blitz was an open season for looters and other criminals. Also, it simply depends on people’s risk tolerance for different things. Just because someone tolerates the risk of getting infected by covid doesn’t mean they’d flaunt blitz blackouts or vice versa for that matter.
Another reason why I find the comparison of the blitz and pandemic wonky is the nature of the enemy. I can imagine most people would be far more emotionally driven to end the Nazi scourge on the battlefield or in the factories than just staying at home all day to protect granny. Hell, even comparing it to the Spanish flu is different, simply due to the lethality of the virus. Someone flaunting restrictions might be doing so since they see the risk to themselves as negligible, but would comply if it meant avoiding far deadlier disease.
Being we’re making insults and using WWII, I often wondered how the Nazis were able to round up so many Jewish people, turns out we can use Covid as a guide, Informants our very own community members and neighbours were telling the Gestapo much like how those that wear their masks and take it on to their hands to moan at the maskless ones and even report them to the police.

Suddenly, Marina Hyde is someone who would had very likely reported on their neighbour had they existed back in the 1930s, and yes that’s not a nice thing to say about Marina Hyde, this was just a mere comparison.

Maybe we shouldn’t compare today standards to what happened in the past? thankfully we’re in a country that isn’t about to round up maskless people or Unvaxxed, just fine them.

I’m Double Jabbed, and worn my mask non stop for the last couple of months, but if we’re going to go on about the Blitz, we’re going back farther to compare today people desires to record and report, to those that used the Gestapo to settle mere scores.
I’ve noticed anti maskers and those against any restrictions seem to use the fact that something is not 100% effective as reason to not use it at all. Like not stopping 100% of spread is the same as being totally useless.
