Linlithgow pub changes name over “racist connotations”

  1. People can be up in arms either way about this, but I wouldn’t want to be in charge of a pub with a name like that. It is just embarrassing whatever its origins.

  2. > Some locals have started a petition to keep the name saying it is an important part of local folklore in the West Lothian town.

“Hound” still means dog though, so what’s the problem?

  3. Wait…if the name *Black Bitch* was racist why was the bit that changed the *Bitch* part and not the *Black* part. If *Black Bitch* is racist, how is *Black Hound* any less racist?

Fair enough change the name, I’ll admit the first time I drove by I was thought it was a weird name this day in age, but to claim the name is racist is weird. Even the article goes on to claim it wasn’t inclusive, which is perhaps correct, but the article is focusing on the racism part which is confusing.

  4. I see various Daily Mail reading Boomers are getting upset about the name change. But pubs have changed names all the way through history.

The Turk’s Head in Leeds – founded in the early 1700s – changed its name to Whitelock’s in the 1880s by the family who took it over.

  5. So this repeat story hides the painting of a big dog on the side of the building, clearly showing it refers to a dog. Very clever, great work journalists.
