It’s not extortionate. It’s a pretty reasonable sum to be honest. I had to pay significantly more to get a spouse visa (not even permanent) for my wife. We don’t grant citizenship automatically by being born here, else we’d have even more of a housing crisis on our hands. There has to be some form of barrier and benefit for the taxpayer, else our welfare system and society would not cope with the numbers.
Basically if you can’t afford that amount then how are you going to contribute to society. It’s not a big amount to gain lifelong access to one of the world’s greatest social care systems.
The whole system needs a complete overhaul but that will never happen…
