Slats, trained by Volney Phifer, was the first lion used in the branding of the newly formed studio. Born at the [Dublin Zoo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dublin_Zoo) on March 20, 1919, and originally named Cairbre (“Charioteer” in Gaelic), Slats was used on all black-and-white MGM films between 1924 and 1928. The current lion used “Leo” was also born in Dublin Zoo.

As is the current lion!
And here was me starting to worry we wouldn’t see this posted this year. All is right in the world now.
This is the best “Bet you didn’t know they were Irish”
I think we should nickname him Liamo the Lion
I’d be lion if I said I hadn’t heard that once a year since I was about 10
