When did we & why are we getting new telephone boxes?

  1. Was there a plan to do something useful with them? Charging,WiFi, information or some such,I forgets.

  2. For public service remit. Including but not limited to, for emergency situations, & domestic violence calls where the partner may monitor mobile phone use

  3. It’s part of a commercial arrangement, if these are the ones I’m thinking of. Around the back you’ll see a big advertising panel conveniently aimed at the road – the phone booth itself is kind of a figleaf to give it a public service angle, but the ad panel is the real “benefit” of them.

  4. Believe they were brought back for several reasons, domestic abuse, homeless people contacting shelters (believe thats a free call number) amongst other reasons

  5. These things don’t require planning permission for the large digital advertising on the back of them… so as I understand it they’re a covert way to sneak in advertising only.

  6. I always thought the Irish for telephone was telefón, but on the new boxes it’s spelled teilafón.

If you can’t trust a phone box I’m not sure where we are in society.

  7. I don’t think they’re all fully operational yet but I think the idea is they’re going to have interactive maps in them which the local authorities can update and put in tourist spots etc.

There was also a claim its useful for homeless people who may have to ring to access homeless services. Eir claimed they were contacted by the Dublin Regional Homeless Executive saying as much but the DRHE flat out denies this and it was pointed out that needing to ring to find one night only accomodation is a model that has been and is still being moved away from.

  8. Because every teenage boy needs to experience getting a blowjob in a telephone booth at 3am, from a girl who’s forgotten the booth is mostly glass.

    Or maybe that’s just a cork thing……..
