Mater Hospital ‘under extreme pressure’, appeals to public to avoid Emergency Dept if possible

  1. Limerick hospital declared major incident earlier today due to amount of people attending A&E with respiratory illnesses. I suppose New years celebrations are over

  2. I was referred by my GP and admitted to the Mater on Friday for emergency surgery to remove a kidney stone. Spent the first night on a trolley (they can’t do surgery unless they have a bed to send you back to) Another trolley patient remarked to a nurse in A&E on Saturday that it was very quiet and she explained that things had ground to a halt, that there was literally no more room for anyone else. Got a bed on Saturday and surgery on Sunday. The staff there are heroes.

  3. all elective surgery at our hospital cancelled (apart from cancer surgery) for next 3 weeks (had already been decided two weeks before christmas) – usually its one week in january when things are postponed.

new issue were having is that there are no ward beds for emergency surgery so essential emergency surgery is being delayed due to all inpatient hospital beds being full – has been like this since early december – worst ive ever seen

*”Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, which covers counties in North Wales, said on Monday it had been inundated with people needing emergency care, leading to a shortage of beds and long waiting times.”*

*”There is a high number of patients coming to our hospitals at the moment with flu, Covid and other respiratory viruses, as well as an increase in those patients who have sustained serious injuries or patients who are not well and need care.”*

Kinda have the feels this is now the new winter theme, shame our services have been so badly manged.

Oh yeah I gave this link, as to give context to how this is effecting more than just one place.
