Paid sick leave is a statutory entitlement from today

  1. My company doesn’t count sick days unless anyone abuses them, and nobody does because we value that trust and do our best to not abuse it. I honestly feel so lucky, and hope more and more companies start doing that, as I believe the majority of people don’t call in sick unless there’s an actual reason.

  2. I emigrated to Aus and holy shit I did not realise Ireland didn’t have sick leave.

Better than nothing but 3 days per year and 70% is a pisstake too.

  3. That is better than nothing, but they really need to do match the rest of the EU.

Where I work they are pretty generous with sick days, as long as you don’t take the piss.

I get 3 weeks as long as I have a doctor’s cert at full pay and 70% after that.

  4. What if you’re already on a contract?
Have a feeling my employer (well known cheap shop) will wrangle out of it saying that I signed my contract before the legislation. Not even getting minimum wage😂

  5. I know the intentions of this are good. But the unintended consequences of raising the cost of doing business is fewer jobs and more automation. As a business owner, I can tell you that my employees already make more than I do. And due to a highly competitive market, I cannot raise prices. So, my only option to stay profitable is to trim staff. I don’t like it, It is just a fact. In the end, it will be worse on the overall economy.

  6. My employer didnt/forgot to put a cap on sick pay in our contracts so for old hires it increases 2 weeks for every year worked. Currently at 6 weeks worth of sick pay @100%.

I complain so much about them but compared to 3 days statutory they’re generous!

This is a minimum wage clothing retailer if anyone is curious.

  7. In my old place, before this you would only get payed after 3 days of sickness onwards (so if youre sick on monday, miss the whole week, you would get payed for thursday+friday). You would also need a GP letter. Does this affect them? Because they TeChNiCaLlY pay sick pay. Curious.

  8. Ummm, if you don’t work, you don’t get paid. Simple as that. And there’s no thing as a employer rejecting sick days. If your sick you don’t go in. The boss can’t ask anything about it cuz it pertains to medical. And if your really worried about losing your job you can always get a doctor’s note. But yeah, no work no pay. Doesn’t make sense.

  9. Lol what a joke we get 10 Days by law full pay, can believe Ireland didn’t have that when I left or doesn’t have it now..

  10. Can someone explain to me how this actually works in practice? I’m working with the same employer since 2004, but it’s all specific purpose contracts, usually to teach/tutor a specific module(s), or a variable hours contract when it comes to research work. For example, I’d 7 contracts for semester 1 this year to deliver all or part of 7 different modules. Marking assignments is separate again to that. My understanding is that if I’m sick, I have to reschedule with the students, book a room and deliver the missing session ASAP after it was due. I’ve never actually taken a sick day because I have no idea how paid sick leave of the type in the new provisions, or whatever came before it, works. When I had surgery a couple of times in recent years, I scheduled it for the summer when I was out of contract as I didn’t know how else to manage it. But in theory, if I caught the Strep/RSV/COVID/flu doing the rounds, what happens?

  11. i live in Ireland for 10 years now and didn’t know there was no sick leave per law because my employer does pay when I’m sick

  12. ITT: People outside of Ireland confusing statutory sick leave paid by employers with illness benefit paid by the government. Now we have both for everyone, if that clarifies things.

  13. About time. I worked one year in a corporate setting at the start of my career and the boss was a complete stinge, so we got nothing extra on top of absolutely crap salaries. One month I had chicken pox and a lung infection in the same pay month, was bad enough spending a month sick to then have to spend the following month broke cos I only had 12 days’ pay.
There’s a real disparity between employers who do or don’t appreciate their employees, and bosses like mine are the reason we need this as a bare minimum.
