Nearly 2m UK households behind on bill payments as Christmas approaches | UK cost of living crisis

  1. The only reason I’ve been able to pay my bills is because my mum has been helping me. I’m 34 and have been stuck in retail and service jobs almost all my life, these jobs simply do not pay enough to live without living in a houseshare and removing a lot of ‘luxuries’ like having hobbies or going out for a meal. Too many jobs pay minimum wage or barely more than minimum wage, and minimum wage is too low for people to actually live. These jobs are apparently designed for students, working holidays and young people living with their families, and yet most people that work these jobs are like you and me. We’re paying bills, we’re trying to live, we’re trying to support our families, this shit just isn’t good enough.

  2. Today I got – along with my exorbitant energy bill – a lovely reminder from Scottish Power that if they can’t take my direct debit on the agreed date they’ll also charge me an extra fiver.

Because clearly if I can’t afford to pay on time then the sensible thing to do is charge me even more. Tapeworms have more ethics.

The next paragraph was about how they understand how difficult times are for us all and how they’re here to help.

  3. I can’t afford it now so I just cancelled it and let them switch me off, if it goes up again that’s pretty scary. I’m learning to cope. Trips to the library, insulated blanket and a lot of reading

  4. I was walking down regent street last Saturday evening. It was absolutely buzzing, the wealth inequality is getting worse

  5. Is this all down to “austerity” whereby hard working people in vastly huge profit making businesses keep their shareholders sweet and their workers on thier knees ? Time to cap shareholder profits and up the people that make them that profit .It’s like the 1900s again .
