Macron slammed for asking: ‘Who could have predicted the climate crisis?’

  1. Quoteception from the article and from him :

    >”Who could have predicted the wave of inflation that was unleashed? Or the climate crisis and its spectacular impact on our country this summer?”

It’s either a veiled accusation or a dumb statement.

    * The inflation part has been pretty clear because 2008 didn’t resolve itself : no punishment for financial criminals, junk bond temporarily absorbed, money printer going brrrr since 2008 … but soon we’ll have the rerun. So it can be a way to ask : wtf are the market regulators and central banks doing ?

    * The climate crisis part is weird, because environmental activism has been soaring in face of continuous corporate greed, inaction and obfuscation, so at best (and I’m really out on a limb here, playing the devil’s advocate) he’s kinda saying that in spite of the effort made, it has been dire and we need to do better, faster (but if that’s the case it very poorly worded).

So yeah, those are two statements that are either way to subtle for such a speech, or a stupid way to downplay the lack of good results (not that I really expected things to get really better in since 2020 anyway, but politicians gotta demagogism).

  2. 20-year-old here.

Please, users of r/europe, tell me why I should have any hope in the future instead of just drinking until I die.

  3. Oh, uh, dunno. Maybe the *decades* of warnings of scientists & climate activists? That’s by far the dumbest statement he made. And these people make the decisions that would affect those things. Not that the voters are any smarter… Running to far right & left extremists and not wanting to give up their cuddly comfortable lives. Covid was already proof that we’re collectively fucked.

  4. Didn’t Macron tout the Paris Agreement and was outraged when the US dropped out while most countries couldn’t meet basic goals?

  5. I’m Macron’s age. Honestly, we grew up with talk of the environment in the news every day, there was the hole in the ozone layer. CFC gases in fridges, etc. It was all current affairs. If you’re gen x and say something like this, you’re either dumb, not paying attention or simply just don’t care. I’m guessing ex banker Macron is the latter.

  6. Does he purposefully say hilariously moronic things to distract from his domestic failures or something? Is he pulling a Trump? Because he seems to just consistently say ridiculous things and that’s the only explanation I can think of other than him simply being a genuine idiot.
