This poster looks like a modern horror remake of Father Ted

  1. It’s a Catholic Community, set on an island and has a Priest as one of the major characters as far as comparisons go.

I really liked the show, tbh I didn’t think it was scary at all but it was an interesting exploration of faith, the danger of viewing everything through a Religious lens, how a bad individual can use Religion as a boon to make themselves feel better and also justify hurting others but what makes it great is it’s a fairly sympathetic criticism of Religion.

The writer had an incredibly Catholic upbringing so he really does “get it” as far as the little contradictions of being a Catholic and Catholic doctrine goes and while there is a focus on the madness of crowds, a lot of the Catholic characters are incredibly rational and intelligent. They do show the value Religious faith provides individuals, the hope it provides and how it can ground people in times of stress. Even many of the Religiously motivated characters who do terrible stuff are very well intentioned also.

It basically doesn’t come across as this … sort of /r/atheism or frankly /r/Ireland critique of Catholicism it’s well worth the watch. For others who have a Catholic upbringing – Linklater’s portrayal of this empathethic, Jesuit style Priest who uses the vernacular of the people while sprinkling in Religious quotes is perfect. Literally had flashbacks to my childhood with some of the conversations he had. Perhaps emmy-nomination worthy

I would recommend, but it is heavy on these monologues that sometimes feel really artificial and indulgent. So it’s not for everybody, many people seem to utterly hate it.
