No doubt we’ll continue for as long as we can our moronic and unsustainable system.
We always need more people to make the GDP grow.
We have no common goal. We’re a peak individualism in a society that has become a machine to annihilate our biosphere.
But hey, who cares about planetary limits and the consequences of ignoring them ?
Who cares if we’re not a country (or even in an area) in which we could extract oil, gaz and coal ? Who cares about preparing to peak oil ? Let’s go try to make as many “smart cities” as we can, until we won’t have enough juice to power the few “autonomous vehicules” only the richest will be able to afford.
i love how people still hope houses will become cheaper
I don’t think we should. Look how ugly Switzerland already looks.
And most growth comes from migration, not from new babies. And many migrants leave Switzerland once they retire. And spend their hard earned money not here, but abroad.
We voted some years ago against population growth, but it was sadly rejected by fear of “being racist” and not having enough active people for the elderly population.
As Austria had in April 2022 a population of 9,027,999, this could also mean 2023 or some months after is when Switzerland surpasses Austria.
I always found it interesting to compare us with our “bigger alpine twin”, although in the future “bigger” only in geographic area.
People complain how owning a house is unaffordable and how rent prices are exploding. This is why. On average, we got 80000 people net migration per year, and most of them want to live in the already crowded hubs like Zürich, Basel and Geneva.
Neither construction nor infrastructure can keep up with this.

I’m honestly appalled by the anti-immigration sentiment in this thread.
The real problem isn’t the number of people we have, it’s the unequal distribution of resources by our capitalist system. And you’re helping it by blaming a scapegoat instead of the rich.
Out of my coochie, no baby is going to useflutschi.
Jeez… Plenty of naive people in here… I understand why the Elite can get such cheap workforce 😉
Unfortunatelly, there is a lot of speculators who are happy to keep buildings empty just to keep demand high. There is also the short-term let industry keeping residential accommdation empty for over 50% of the time.
I like AirBnB as a means by which private home owners can allow others to benefit whilst they are away but it has emabled a greedy industry to blossem.
Venture capital firms are buying up whole residential blocks just as holiday lets.
This is a goid example of technology running faster than regulation.
Humping like rabbits, I see. You Alpine weirdos, you
I’ll never understand why a country with so much open land insists on building and thus living on top of each other everywhere. Even houses 30 min outside the city center have their neighbors all looking down to their properties, while across the street you will have 500 acres of agricultural land barely being used for anything at all.

The best way forward would be for companies to allow to be fully remote in Switzerland if the job can be done from home. I’d happily move out from Zurich to a remote village if not the commute.
Funny thing is that 9M is roughly the size of New York City
As soon as hubby can transfer, there will be two less residents next year. Bye!

Not a really sustainable concept to just grow the economy with more and more people in a small country
This means that Switzerland will have more inhabitants than Austria
Interesting considering the rate at which the male sperm count in this country has declined.
You can’t have more growth without more population..
With people scapegoating immigrants, “the rich”, or investment firms. Switzerland is plenty big enough to accommodate more people. We just need continuing development of new homes/infrastructure. More people will be virtually necessary to maintain the same standards of living with an aging population and declining birth rates.
It did feel a little cramped in the Migros the other day.

Disappointing lack of YIMBYS in this thread.
