Increase in UK state pension age to 68 could come eight years early

  1. At this stage they may as well just fold NI into income tax proper and do away with state pensions for millennials, we’re never going to see one.

  2. I said 20+ years ago that by the time I hit my late 60’s there will be no such thing as state pensions.

So far it’s looking more and more likely.

My generation will be the first to where you will be expected to work until you die.

  3. I remember watching things like Tomorrow’s World as a kid in the 70s.

Two of the big ideas for the future were that one day people wouldn’t need to work because robots would do it all. And (for some reason) that we would all eat a daily nutrition pill instead of food.

As it has turned out, as we get more and more automation, and goods can be produced more cheaply with less human labour, we haven’t opted for more leisure time. Instead we have opted to keep slaving away to have tens times as much “stuff” as anyone could even have imagined 50 years ago.

And now even the quite miraculous increases in lifespan over recent decades have a sting in the tail, as many people will be working far beyond the age that they are really fit to work. And quite possibly doing shitty jobs, because it gets increasingly difficult to find a good job when you are over 50.

I started a small pension when I was younger, and I can just about afford to retire at 60. I probably won’t, because I would really be quite poor (no car or holidays or much else), but I should be able to retire a couple of years early at least. I really wish I has put more into my pension, I wouldn’t have missed it at the time and it would have really helped now.

For younger people here, if you can afford to it is well worth putting a bit aside. Nobody likes to think about getting old, but you will eventually and your future self will thank you for it. Maybe think about all the things you buy and question the more pointless items.

  4. Work until you die for the millennial generation? We’ve been fucked by every other aspect of society so why not take our pensions at this point.

  5. I hate the way the government has put across raising the retirement age as a good thing- that it frees older people to carry on working. You know full well that people don’t want to be worked to death you vile cretins. A lot of people aren’t well enough/, don’t have the energy to work when they get to that age. It’s disgusting, they really hope we will die before we can claim pensions.

  6. The thought of working up to 70 is Absolutely disgusting

    Fuck this government

And fuck all the twats that support them, and fuck their triple locked government pensions

  7. If you could just work until you die in a plague pit run by a Tory voter then that would be great, thanks. How else are you going to pay the rent?

I think millennials have an unrealistic expectation that life will be as good for them as it is for their parents.

  8. I know this is a distasteful point, but hasn’t the pension bill been slashed by loads of old people dying from COVID?

  9. So if I stop paying into my pension can I get any of the money I paid into it back lmao, bruv we ain’t gonna see a pension in fucking 2080 or whatever, climate change will see to that

  10. As a millennial, I resigned myself to either not being able to retire at all or not getting any sort of state pension a long time ago.

I fully expect to be working to just survive until I drop dead.

At which point, my boss at the time will probably give me shit for being a lazy millennial.

  11. Lots of comments about how they think the pension will disappear for millenials. By then, wont the entire population demographic have inverted? At the moment a shit load of baby boomers going through with a smaller working population to support them, but within 30yrs, all the boo ers will have died, leaving a more typcial population and age pyramid??

  12. I’m 32 and with health issues already, I made the decision to go part-time about 18 months ago. Part of my reasoning is that full-time was really physically draining me, but I also don’t believe I’ll ever live to retirement age at the rate it’s being pushed back.

I think other people in my generation will follow (IF they are as fortunate as me to be able to afford to do it now) as the dream of comfortable retirement is rapidly disappearing. I don’t think the Government can dangle that carrot in front of my generation forever. My mates are not still going to be doing their physically intensive jobs (trades, retail etc) for another 30+ years.

  13. Retirement age 68.

    Average male life expectancy 79.

I’m going to be working for 48 years and retired for 10. Considering that I work in construction that it probably an optimistic estimate.

Fuck this. I may as well just die now and get it over with.

  14. Boomers pulling up the last ladder behind them. Housing, education careers, the stock market, unionization, taxes, the nhs, and now finally pensions.

  15. Just retire early and use the generational wealth passed down to you to own several houses to rent out to plebs, easy stuff.

  16. Unless I get a huge fucking inheritance I won’t be retiring at all. I may aswell just die now.

My legs fucked, my eyes are fucked, and my hearings fucked.

And I’m very likely gonna have a fucked back too.

So I’m either ending up in a care home being abused by staff or I’m gonna go out my way.

Looks like it’ll be my way then.

  17. Where are they going after this rise? Like, instead of a pension the state just chips in 50% of your funeral costs after they drag your carcass away from your work desk?

  18. If the state pensions are no longer paid until 68+ , manual jobs like drivers or cashiers along with professionals such as accountants getting automated and made obsolete. Where will people work , what kind of jobs and how many will be left in 30 years time?

  19. The retirement age should be reduced to 55 for state pension. Doing so will free up lots of jobs for younger folks.

  20. Assume you won’t get one and pump up workplace/private pension as much as you can. I didn’t contribute in my 20s barely at all and it’s a big regret, I now sacrifice 12.5% of my wage into a pension to make up for it.

  21. By the time I’m allowed to retire, I’m going to need my “Congrats on being 100” letter from the reigning monarch to claim it.

  22. The biggest crime is not teaching the youth about investing, investing has never been easier but people still think your going to lose all your money, starting at 18 can have you retired at 50 easily if your chuck 250 into a investment pot every month, most people in there late 20s I speak to at work have less than 15k saved and just accept they are going to work til they die, sad really.

  23. The tories are preparing the country to be completely privatised, but what they’re actually doing is preparing capitalism to fail, which will make it much easier to implement UBI and other socialist ideas. Even the most ardent ‘middle class’ tory will vote Labour when they’re facing the prospect of never retiring, having to pay for healthcare and having rolling blackouts due to crappy capitalist management of utilities. The US have spent a good century ruining their country, Boris and the rest are trying to speedrun late stage capitalism, and it’s going to bite them in the backside – heat the water too quickly and the frogs will revolt.

  24. The thing is a lot old people are so shit at working because their body and minds have slowed down. I used to work at a company that where basically waiting for dozens of people to retire so they could get some fresh blood into the system because once your in a job and have been for awhile it’s hard to get rid of you.

Raising the state pension age is helping no one.
