“You might think of Germany as a global environmental leader. But if you look at actual practices, you’ll see a different story. Germany burns a lot of coal, ranking ninth in world coal consumption in 2020.”
If they only could rebuild them into Thorium reactors instead. It’s much more environmentalfriendly than uranium or plutonium. Because they are closing down, Europe is now more dependant on gas than ever because the price on electricity is skyrocketing!
Germany’s nuclear mistake. Merkel firmly attached the country to the Russian tit
Time to undo that
Everyone should take a leaf out of France’s book. They’re doing it right. The future should be a mix of renewables and nuclear.
I think that there is worthwhile stuff in the article. However.
> No government that really regarded climate change as its top energy priority
…does rather raise the question of whether there is *any* government that really regards climate change as its top energy priority.
Let’s see how it goes with Greens in the coalition.
>Merkel pledged that the gap would be filled by renewables. That promise has not been kept.
This is simply not true. *Every* closed NPP was replaced by renewables up to now.
And Germany uses less coal today than it had ten, or twenty, or thirty years ago.
So Germany managed two things simultaneously: closing down NPPs (for environmental reasons) *and* decreasing CO2 emissions (for climate reasons).
And just as a side note: Germany’s per capita CO2 emissions are just half as high as America’s. If Germany’s achievements are terrible in the eyes of the *Atlantic* – how would you assess America’s then?
Speaking of mistakes, the writer of the article was George W. Bush’s speechwriter and an enthusiastic supporter of the Iraq War.
