Choosing my taxes? Can someone explain why this is even an option and what the best decision is?

  1. You are not choosing taxes, your are choosing how much of your bruto wage should be used to preventively pay your taxes (to avoid bad surprises when doing your taxes and realizing you need to pay thousands of euros in one go).

If you have a single job, it’s quite easy to calculate your yearly wage and deduce the taxes you will have to pay. This is the “précompte professionel”. In this case, it’s just about paying (18+%) more than the foreseen 11.11%.

If you end up paying too much, you’ll get the extra paid back from the state (though quite a while later).

If you can afford it (by not needing as much money as possible every month), it might be better/easier to pay the bigger amount: that way you’ll have to pay less taxes later on or you might even get money back.

A more complete/educated answer would require accounting/fiscal skills.
