Get Into Space – January 2023 Calendar of free events to see or do

  1. Hey folks, I only uploaded the image of the calendar as it seemed the easier thing to do! For the bits where it says things like “find out more” or “book your place here” you will just need to google those events (which are free btw!).

Royal Astro Society on Eventbrite has all their events listed including the two mentioned on 17th and 25th Jan

Gresham College has their own website and the lecture on 18th Jan is part of their “Cosmic Conclusions” series (you can view the previous lectures for free on their site too!)

As for the 1st UK Space Launch, that will definitely be in the news, and potentially televised when they finally get to agreeing a date!

  2. It’s great to see this! I often walk my dog after dark and it’s been great seeing Jupiter and Mars in the sky recently.

Jupiter with the binoculars is fantastic, I have a *really* old/cheap pair and I was *just about* able to make out some of the moon’s. I wasn’t sure until I checked an astronomy app I have but they were in the right positions.

It’s also just great to have some general non-news/nice and positive things in the sub 🙂

  3. The UK is the only country to have had an orbit capable space program and given it up. The Virgina Galactic launch will be the first UK launch on the technicality of departing from British soil but it’s less British in terms of the history of the hardware and people involved.
