All government paid people need to strike, they have all been losing money every single year due to cost of living.
Something needs to be done about rents. There’s no point raising wages when rents keep climbing.
Yeah if there’s one group of people the government doesn’t want to piss off it’s the Civil Servants, and no I am not being sarcastic.
The civil servants are the people who actually get shit done. Like seriously, as someone who is the daughter of two (former) civil servants, they, not the politicians, actually do all the grunt work. They’re the ones who have to tell the politicians their ideas are unworkable, they’re the ones who actually impliment policies, they’re the ones who run everything from Historic England Giftshops to the Powergrid. The government pushing them to go on strike basically like the government punching themselves in the bollocks, they would be all talk and no action.
In short, the Civil Servants should go on strike and remain on strike until the Government promises to tackle the COLC.
The fact that a huge proportion of the workforce only have access to jobs that pay pitiful wages is a huge problem in our society. This is a huge part of what trade unions were intended to combat and I am absolutely behind them using their bargaining power to do so.
However, I really find it very hard to believe that anyone is really “skipping meals” due to cost given how incredibly cheap basic food is compared to other essential expenses such as rent. The fact that people are legitimately struggling to make ends meet does not need to be illustrated by ridiculous statements like this. I think this undermines the seriousness of the situation we are in.
Imagine a general strike with the civil service’s support
We need a general strike then a general election.
This country has been systematically stripped of everything.
Unfortunately, there will never be an early GE as the tories know they won’t win. So, instead, they will go full scorched earth for the next 2 years, taking what they can to set themselves and their mates up and leaving nothing but ruins, at our collective expense, for the next government to deal with.
Shit is on the edge. If the civil servants go into a strike the country will be in free fall. Couple that with all the other strikes planned and we could have something worse than 1926.
Ken how it was argued that veganism should be a protected belief ? Well do you think you could argue trade unionism should be a protected belief in the same way ? In regards to refusing to cross picket lines ?
Sounds OK to me. It’s a pain to deal with the disruption but people have been pushed too hard for too long and it is time to fight back a bit. We have left the golden era when the economy benefited the average person and more and more wealth is being hoarded at the top. If coordinated strikes help redress that even a tiny bit then we should be supportive of it.
I still don’t understand why civil servants didn’t strike yet. For years, their pay “increases” were in the region of nothing up to 1.5%, whilst NHS staff and police were getting more (they deserve it, btw).
And besides, according to many, they don’t do much anyway, so there won’t be an impact.
There are loads of IT jobs currently vacant across the civil service because the salaries are incredibly low. Was contacted a couple of months ago by a recruiter from HMRC who was asking if I was interested in applying for a senior IT management role. It was a massive step up for me in terms of responsibilities but it would have meant taking a pay cut of nearly 50% so I declined and that role is still being advertised today.
Workers are skipping meals because they’re so late to work because the trains are on strike all the time.
Sounds like it’s going to become utter chaos like in thr 70s
