Covid tests on arrival from China will be optional

  1. Well I praised the government yesterday for being proactive. It appears they were just pretending to do something. What a waste of time…why would I bother if it adds 30 minutes to my journey? And even if I fail, no one cares and there’s no restrictions?

  2. Why? What possible justification can be given for this? Is it the expense? Is it to placate the Chinese government? Is someone getting a backhander from somewhere?

If we are to be exposed to a potentially deadly risk *again*, I demand to know the reason.

  3. I’m sure that tourists who suspect they have covid will do the right thing and volunteer to ruin their holiday and take on the enormous expense and mental toll of self isolating in a hotel for a fortnight, instead of just keeping quiet and chancing it.

  4. utterly pointless, which person from China is going to volunteer to be tested if they have spent all that money to travel here and suspects they have covid?

  5. Didnt Whitty or one of the medical experts say testing on arrrival was pretty pointless anyway to prevent infections?

  6. Making testing optional doesn’t really make sense as no one is going to be signing up for it.

That said, I’m not worried, the evidence (as interpreted by our epidemiologists) is that China is suffering from the same omnicron wave we encountered the Christmas before last. So our immunity is pretty decent. Plus we have about 36k cases a week currently so transmission is inherently prevalent and it’s something we’ve learnt to live with.

  7. Because they have to present a recent negative test to get on the plane in the first place. Not optional.

Seriously, the amount of people that just take the independents bait and don’t bother reading the article is insane.

  8. Am I missing something here if you need a negative test to fly from China why would you need a test when you get to Heathrow

  9. Ha ha optional testing. Just either do mandatory testing or no testing. Make a decision and stick to it.
