Then the Tories will say that the NHS is “too expensive” (its not); that we have an “ageing population” (no more so than other developed countries); that higher pay adjustments “are unaffordable” (81% of a fair pay award would return to gov in taxes and reduced agency costs); that it would “stoke inflation” (it wont to any meaningful degree)
Then they will introduce means testing and it will be all over.
This has all been obvious since 2010, yet the electorate does not seem to care.
We will get the health service we deserve.
“However, Rishi Sunak and Jeremy Hunt, the chancellor, have ruled out increasing this year’s £1,400 offer because they are keen to demonstrate restraint over public-sector pay to help the Conservatives regain a reputation for economic competence.”
What? Since when have they ever had that?
It’s hard to really buy the claim now that the body that’s recommends NHS pay is truly independent when they clearly aren’t following the data and are rather conveniently towing the Tory line.
There is nothing to suggest inflation will get anywhere near 2% in the first half of next year – the OBR is predicting 7.3% next year – and the data is clearly not showing this will be good for morale or retention
And here’s me thinking and being told that these pay review bodies were ‘independent’.
Plan here seems simple. You don’t get pay when you strike. Cost of living is shit.
This seems like a simple wait them out because you will starve them back to work. It is sick and cynical but no other reason makes sense to stonewall negotiations so blatantly.
Govt are assuming they can win the war of attrition. Workers will get to a point where they can’t keep strike action and losing pay.
Edit: nice that this comment has been cropped and posted to /r/greenandpleasant and a bunch of the idiots there seem to be thinking I am an empathic tory and this is a plan I agree with. I dont tories are cunts. I am as left wing in most cases as any other socialist but I dared once to go against the hive mind thinking of that sub as was banned and called a red tory.
You lot are as much an echo chamber as the right rags and forums you claim to be better than.
2% is an insult. Add a 0 to the end of that number and we’re getting somewhere!
Imagine working the past 3 years on a low salary of 30k while having to commit years to training, enduring a stressful job that involves saving lives and dealing with the general public. At the same time half the country had their entire wage subsidised by the government and enjoyed the comfort of not working and being free to do what they wanted for like 9 months.
You ask for a pay rise to match inflation and have to go to war with the government.
I don’t know how anyone works in the public sector, but thank god they do!
Pay the nurses enough so they can live near London hospitals. Young nurses are impossible to hire and our wards are understaffed
Pay people more so they can buy more stuff to keep the economy stimulated. If people aren’t paid enough they can only buy the essentials for the most part and the economy will stagnate.
The sooner we personally remove the government the better. This country needs a revolution. Not permission to vote
Strikes and unions keep the Tories in power, just look at the 1980s. It then took another decade and the mostly strike-free 1990s till they finally got kicked out in 1997.
How they can dish out these gross pay rises and pretend to believe in a “high income” economy. Get paid more working in a supermarket than being a nurse
Are they friggin kidding? I just want to leave the NHS…
As someone who has always worked in private sector, with family working for NHS, I always find it interesting when NHS workers complain a payrise doesn’t meet inflation. When does it ever?
Plus, people forget that NHS pay is quite competitive, with possibilities of constant promotions, plus the added perks of sick leave, pension etc. which are rarely a thing in private sectors.
I think everyone should be given rises etc to meet the ever increasing living costs, but the lack of appreciation of the added perks that are very rarely available at private companies is baffling.
that’s the spirit nurses!

(if you’re working class, obviously.

Hopefully the Ukraine will be already in the system filing up the shortages.
Many are skilled. UK needs to quicken their documentation process and training. They already legally allowed in.
The Tories are full on assault of the NHS and sticking the knife in to kill the NHS by losing staff.
We had a genocidal government since Cameron onwards and Johnson took it to a new level in the pandemic and Sunak and co are out to wipe out the remaining ones.
It’s hard to watch this country getting wrecked in real time…
Accidentally / on purpose amputations all round, it is then
Let’s all just go back to the golden days of barber surgeons & gall stone parties
Government backed themselves into a corner, you can’t give people on the dole 10% increase and not expect the workers to want the same if not more!

2% is below inflation. Its a pay cut.
Real terms pay cut since 2010 will get even worse
So staff will leave
Then the service will deteriorate further
