Nobody seems to know for sure, but it coincided with controversy over remarks by JK Rowling that have (again) been interpreted as transphobic. Although she didn’t mention vulvas, she did make a comment about “penised individuals” being charged with rape and officially recorded as women. This prompted a bit of a reaction in some quarters, and that might have been picked up by Twitter.
Apart from that, there seems to be a bit of a discussion going on about how porn is distorting young girls’ perception of what is “normal”.
These discussions are primarily taking place in English; the fact that the term is trending in Germany doesn’t mean *only* Germans are talking about it, it means that Germans are among those talking about it.
