‘Worst fashion wage theft’: workers go hungry as Indian suppliers to top UK brands refuse to pay minimum wage

  1. This is appalling, people earning just over £4 per month, we in the west spend more than that on lunch one day. Shame on Nike, M&S, Tesco and the rest.

Edit: shopping habits need to change, throwaway clothing and the culture of constant upgrades.

  2. These stores should be ensuring that the workers at their suppliers get the minimum wage (at least) for the country they are in.

Before people pipe-up and say “make the clothes in the UK” all that means is the UK gets the value adding work and the Indians will have to earn even shitter wages working in cotton mills or cotton plantations. Because the UK manufacturers will squeeze the cotton suppliers for the lowest possible price.

  3. Its never been easier to exist with 2nd hand clothes, from charity shop to vinted. You just need to slightly adapt from browsing more often instead of going out for one thing.

If youre someone who NEEDS the brand then maybe take a look at whats going on there.

Got a superdry hoodie that looks new for 6.50 the other day. Plus it went to charity.

My gf got a outdoors brand coat that ive forgotten for £8. People constantly get rid of clothes.

  4. The fashion industry is so fucked up. We import cheap stuff from Indian and Bangladesh wear it once or twice then throw it away, only for it to be shipped to Africa where it usually dumped in landfill because they don’t want our dirty shit either.

  5. What’s an ethical place to buy reasonably cheap clothes from?

I often buy my stuff from Tesco because I just want plain black t-shirts and vests and Tesco will always reliably have those. Well, I say “often” but it’s not like I replace them quickly, these t-shirts last me for years. They cost around £4.50 a pop but admittedly I also haven’t put much thought into where they came from or how they were manufactured.

So yeah, ethical plain black t-shirts and pants, no designer labels or brands. If anyone recommends me a place and it’s not too expensive I’ll be on board.

  6. Imagine if every item made cost just £1 more and that money went to the worker. It’d barely get noticed at this end but change their lives.

  7. Obviously completely unacceptable – and if it’s such an open secret why aren’t the companies in question being fined for disobeying a court order?

It’s not like minimum wage *in India* is a huge business cost to companies that are making goods to be sold in rich western markets!
