  2. Why for f***king sake states does not fund public nurseries? In most of western Europe you have few months to get back to work and you must find a private nursery or babysitter and pay up to 2.000EUR/month. This forces some new moms to just quit the job and stay home. What the fuck Europe. Why we can’t have free/cheap public nursery for working???

  3. >average number of children per woman was at 1.17

Wow, I thought it would be like 1.4 or 1.5, but not that low…

  4. both parents must work in order to afford rent, food, diapers and the nanny to look after the kid. if they make it throught the first months, when you try to send her to nursery school, you find out they are full everywhere or simply you need a third salary to afford it. and things get worse if grandparents are not available to help when something unwanted or unplanned happens. really, the cost of living in Italy is astronomical for young parents

  5. We are too much and too tight here in Pianura Padana, welcome depopulation. Anyway, we did what we could and score a +1 on april ’21 😀

  6. Italian fertility rate actually seemed to slowly recover (like in most Western European countries) after hitting bottom in mid 90’s. But global financial crisis broke that trend

  7. The title is misleading: birth rate is actually at its lowest point since we started recording it.

  8. Best place to invest, elderly care.

Governments will never stop pouring money into it with fears of losing votes.

Open your eyes and now you have money to have children… and to your childrens children 🙂

  9. People don’t have a lot kids – if any at all – because women have other stuff to do like going to school and working. That’s the only reason why birth rates are declining and not money. Rich people don’t have more kids than poor people in today’s world, 100 years ago, or 500 years ago. It has always been about women occupation

  10. No shit… rent is basically as high as salaries over here. This weekend I’m moving back with my parents because I can now work remotely and I’m sick of paying 50% of my full time salary on a fucking bedroom, not even an appartment because in 2021 working full time is no longer enough to sustain yourself without even owning a car, let alone having a fucking kid. I’d rather cut off my own balls and eat them than have a kid in this situation.

Thanks for coming to my rant.

  11. This is going to me an immense issue around Europe and will have serious consequences not only economically but also culturally.

The birth rates have to be higher to replace the population via a natural way. Migration is good but you should be a fraction of the population growth. In this way the people could get absorbed into the Italian/European society without issues. Otherwise you could get a cultural clash.

  12. I hope we’re all ready for the Children of Men timeline because with birth rates across Europe being what they are that’s where we’re heading!

  13. I love the fact that there are studies which perfectly answer why births are declining, yet people here rather give their bullshit reasons instead of googling.

  14. For every euro that I spent on my kids.

First the government takes 33% for National Insurance.

Then I pay 20% of Income Tax.

    Then I pay 21% VAT.

Just so I can give one more slave to the system, that will also give more than 50% of its earning for taxes.

Start supporting working families, helping the ecosystem to create jobs, reducing income tax for families, lowering the VAT for school clothing etc, and then we will speak.

Otherwise they are asking us to breed slaves from them out of our own pocket.

  15. Is not only because of money as many here are saying, it’s also a cultural things, many “first world” country are facing this, Italy is just appear to be the worst right now but in the near future Italy won’t be alone.

  16. I dont think that cost of living is the only factor, that doesn’t explain the difference between Italy and France for example.

  17. Why are people talking about money in this thread? If anything, the reverse is more true, poverty leads to higher birth rates. Wealthiest countries in the world have low birth rates among natives. It’s all about values and religion (or lack of thereof). Give people money, they won’t be popping out kids one after another, for most, it’d still be one and done.
