  1. The subways are filled with signs warning about upskirting. Apparently it is one of the most prevalent crimes in a country with very low crime.

  2. I lived in Korea for two years. You would not believe how much prostitution there is over there. I mean, it’s absolutely everywhere. People always talk about Thailand because of the gogo bars but Korea is 100 times worse. I heard that 20% of women between 15-30 are doing or have done some kind of sex work and I’d well believe it. In Thailand, there are small red light districts but Korea has one in every town and even outside the red light areas there are all sorts of sex for sale businesses: massage, barber shops where you can get blowjobs, coffee girls who will be dropped off at your apartment with coffee and you negotiate the rest, hostess bars, kissing bars, brothels, karaoke rooms with line ups of girls, old ladies selling sex in the parks to the old men playing go (Bacchus Ladies – check it out. It’s sad as fuck. Ladies in their 80’s sometimes selling sex for $5 to old men) and probably loads more foreigners never hear about.

Korean men get separate credit cards at their jobs to pay for sex for clients when entertaining. My school would go for a big dinner each month and all the men would head off to get girls at the end of the night. Wasn’t my scene and my coteacher/translator was female so she wouldn’t have ever been invited. But a mate of mine went with his school. He told me of once all the lads lined up on a couch with a girl each and had a race to see who could come first. He didn’t take part. They brought a line of girls into the room and told him to take his pick. “We’ve paid her to make you come three times so make sure you get three, ok?!”

So, yeah there’s a really creepy culture over there with men. South Korean men have also now surpassed the Japanese as the number one child sex tourists in SEA countries like Thailand and Cambodia.

Funny thing is ask some Koreans and they will tell you prostitution is illegal and Korean girls would never do that kind of thing. For this reason I’m inclined to believe the Japanese when they say the “comfort women” during WW2 were mostly voluntarily there. I’m sure some were deceived and trapped like any prostitution business but Koreans have this dialogue that “Korean women would never do such a thing!”. But they do it all the time so. If you have been to Korea you will understand how rampant the sex trade is there. It’s a normal part of day to day life.
