I’m always surprised when popular protests actually have a result. Great news!
It’s good that they’ve suspended it but it’s too early to relax now, Vucic could restart it later.

I’m shocked actually.
LOL, now that huge production will start in the UK, Germany and Portugal, serbs can go home sleep soundly and undisturbed.
This is phenomenal. Congrats brothers!!!
Nice!
Despite long-time President Vučić ruling as an absolutist monarch, he is a huge populist. He is obsessed with his public image. So the massive demonstrations take effect. He will do anything to keep his position as the main ruler. In spring 2020 the president had made the decision to carry out a major lockdown because of the pandemic. But thousands of people took to the streets in protest and called off the planned lockdown. Now paralyze this mining. Which actually is great news for ecology, since the exploitation of jadarite would generate enormous pollution. I’m very happy in this occasion
HELL FUCKING YEAH
Portugal won’t follow the same path.
Corrupted government will rather annihilate all their mountainous ecosystems for quick cash shared between lobbyists while brainwashing everyone with their eco nazy propaganda that can pretty much be resumed to more eco taxes.
I’m kind of curious whether this has any potential impact on EU plans to do very-large-scale EV lithium-ion battery production. Haven’t seen any articles on that.
Serbia’s definitely not the only place with lithium reserves in Europe, though it looks like there’s little actual mining, so unless it was especially economical to mine or refine the ore in Serbia, I assume that it’s not a fundamental blocker. But I could imagine it mucking up timeframe.
>European lithium market facts
>
>* Apart from small Iberian production for local ceramics/glass use, the EU has no internal lithium supply
>
>* EU is a major importer of lithium consuming 21% of global market (second only to China)
>
>* Lithium processing sites from imported material in several EU countries
>
>* A number of lithium battery projects have been announced in Europe which will considerably increase European lithium demand
>LISBON, Portugal — Portuguese energy company Galp and Swedish electric vehicle battery maker Northvolt on Tuesday announced a joint venture to build in Portugal what they say will be Europe’s largest lithium conversion plant.
>
>Their goal is for the plant to deliver enough lithium hydroxide to provide batteries for about 700,000 electric vehicles a year starting in 2026.
Maybe extraction in Portugal can scale up.
Is this really such a good decision? Lithium production is vital for electric battery production.
Lithium pretty important and valuable right now and more in future. If the mine was properly run it could help Serbia a lot.
but muh batteries
No one wants mines in their own backyard, everyone with a brain understands they need to be somewhere. Hard problem to solve. Or rather, an easy problem to solve, just keep the mines in China and in other dictatorships where the political leadership doesn’t give a shit. I guess the hard part is being comfortable with the solution.
