>A third of Londoners are completely unvaccinated, as a surge of Omicron cases sweeps the capital.
The proportion of the population without a single jab is three times as high in London as in the country as a whole, and the 14 areas with the country’s lowest vaccination rates are all London boroughs. In Westminster four in ten people have not had a single jab.
Low vaccination rates could be contributing to a surge in Omicron in the capital, where more people are now thought to be getting infected with the new variant than with Delta. Yesterday 12,832 cases were reported in total, and numbers are on course to double in a week.
>Although Londoners tend to be younger than the rest of the country, people in the capital have lower vaccination rates in every age group.
The Prince of Wales yesterday spoke out against anti-vaccination conspiracy theories as he thanked volunteers and NHS staff at a vaccination centre. The prince joined the effort to encourage people to have their booster jab with a visit to a makeshift clinic in Kennington, south London.
Expressing his annoyance with the antivax movement, he said: “It is so frustrating, all these nonsense conspiracy theories.”
MPs criticised the unvaccinated yesterday for being “cavalier about the health of the public” in a debate on Covid certification.
>NHS chiefs have been frustrated since the start of the vaccination programme with the way that London has lagged behind. One reason is likely to be a more transient population that lacks the personal links to GP surgeries that have helped ensure strong take-up in other parts of the country.
Overall 11 per cent of the UK has yet to receive a single dose of vaccine, but this rises to 32 per cent in London. Scotland is the most vaccinated part of the UK, with just 8.8 per cent not having had a single dose of Covid vaccine. This rises to 21 per cent in the North West and the West Midlands, which have the highest unvaccinated rates outside London.
Professor Paul Hunter, an epidemiologist at the University of East Anglia, said London’s lower take-up was “probably due to a number of things. London has an ethnically diverse population and it has been difficult to roll the vaccine out to some ethnic groups, so I’m sure that’s part of it. There’s a lot of poverty in parts of London, and that sort of thing also impacts on the take-up of vaccines.”
>In every five-year age band, London has the worst vaccination rates. For example, 88 per cent of over-90s are vaccinated, compared to 97 per cent in the South West. At the other end of the scale, 34 per cent of those aged 12-15 have had a jab in London, rising to 50 per cent in the East of England.
One of the biggest gaps is among those aged 18-24, where London’s rates at 58 per cent are 19 points behind the 77 per cent seen in the South West.
I have a friend who doesn’t want to get jabbed and he just won’t “take the risk”…. And because it hasn’t been tested “long term”. I understand his concern but when you break the argument down he doesn’t have a leg to stand on…. Tries sending me any article that suggests adverse effects, forgetting to realise that all drugs have adverse effects at the extremes and that covid wouldn’t hurt him if he caught it (he may be right there, but he could be dead wrong). He also doesn’t realise if everyone had that attitude then the whole country would be in turmoil.
I have covid and I’m currently on my 2nd day of self isolation. I’m 29 yo + 3x vaccinated, and I feel like an old man my muscles hurt. I hope that I will get rid of this bug.
My brother lives in london is a antivaxer, he is obese, smokes, has high blood pressure.
He used to be the most sensible one in the family but got sucked into the antivax movement.
I tried to persuade him 1000 times to get vaccinated but he never would listen.
Now he is seriously ill with Covid, we don’t know if delta or omicron.
The anti vac movement is just a pile of shit and doesn’t benefit anyone at all. Wankers.
Its ethnic minority groups, theres a much higher rate of vaccine skepticism
The African teacher on the college course I had to attend last year told the class they were testing the vaccine on Africans and many people were dying or getting terrible side effects and I was staggered that he (1) believed such bollocks (2) he was allowed to tell the class this.
Plus there were a fair few people I know who were scared of injections who have gone full anti vax to save face.
Didn’t read the article so I apologize in advance if it answered my question.
Does the UK have readily accessible vaccines for anyone who wants them? In the US you can walk into numerous places and get the vaccine on the spot. Or do you have to make an appointment and wait – which is what we had to do in America last spring.
This has been static since July when it was first reported. They’re never gonna get it 🙁
I’m anti-lockdown and anti-restrictions, but anyone who refuses to get the vaccine at this point is a moron.
Many ‘Antivaxxers’ now are double vaxxed people who were coerced into taking it either through social pressure or threats of losing their jobs and livelihood, but now have been told that their “immunity” has expired. Trouble is that they believed the government then and did the right thing. Now they know about injuries and deaths from the vax and see the brainwashing and propaganda for what it is, and refuse. We are careering towards totalitarianism and there will be no going back. Wake up please
Maybe mandatory vaccines are the way to go. Is there ever going to be an end in sight if we don’t?
In my experience (ok mostly on facebook) those who are most antivax are also those least qualified to understand it.
In my social/work circle of mostly degree educated healthcare professionals guess what, everyone is vaccinated.
Omicron is going to rip through these people. It’s very sad.
It’d be interesting to know where the one third figure came from. It was my understanding that we knew how many people had been vaccinated, but not how many hadn’t, due to things like people being registered at two gp practices or leaving the country but still being registered at a practice. At one point there was a discrepancy of over a million people between the office of national statistics and public health england.
That is Great news for London, cheaper house prices and lasagne.
Unfortunately due to my allergies, I can’t have it. I keep getting the text messages recommending me to get it but if doctors can’t figure out what causes me to come out in blotches and my throat closing up at times, its not worth doing it.
I had a trip to London planned two months ago that I’ve cancelled because I just don’t trust Londoners. How they‘ve gone about with the pandemic is beyond infuriating.
Little attempts at masking up, dense travelling and being super-spreaders at the start of it, to now being the same without a large portion even attempting to vaccinate. The capital lets us down
I live within London’s suck and honestly I think Londoners are just so insulated. Everything’s always within reach, everything is always available, its like they just can’t believe that things could go wrong. Everyone I know who lives in London is in total denial right now.
Are they fucking thick at this point? Do you want this bullshit to end? Get your jab.
I had to guilt my grandmother into getting the vaccine.
I basically said I’ll never see / call you again unless you get it.
She got it the next day.
I feel bad that I made her upset initially, but it was for the greater good.
