Every alcohol price increase coming in 2022 as beer and spirits set for big hike

  1. I’ve already made the switch to ordering online from Europe. I’m saving money already vs prices here.

Edit – I realize now I was being a bit enigmatic – The one I’m using at the moment is mybooze.eu.
Ordered in a few bottles of whiskey just recently with them, some for gifts, the rest for me. You can buy using paypal and they have a 100% delivery guarantee. No issues so long as you order no more than 10 Litres of spirits.

Postage was about 16 quid and that stays the same for up to 10 or 12 bottles.

as an example of prices I got in a redbreast 15, 105 here, 66 on mybooze.eu.

  2. Are we expecting psychological pricing and brand hierarchy to jack things up even more than the minimum?

So say something like Smirnoff, which I think is currently €21 when not on sale, has to go up to €22.09 minimum—should we expect brands like Smirnoff to raise their prices even higher than that so they’re not at the same “low” price point as the no name stuff?

  3. so the cheaper alcohols will be raised to a minimum price. Will that cause a knock on effect and raise prices for everything?

  4. Not sure how much this will actually affect the health system in ireland. Feels more like an educational and cultural problem than a particular price point.

  5. Wouldn’t mind so much if they reduced the price of other groceries to make up for it.
Everything is just getting more and more expensive and this is just a bit of a piss take.
Make healthy stuff more affordable if you want to raise prices of unhealthy things.

All stick, no carrot as per usual here.

  6. I think we’re going about this all wrong. Ireland, in common with most of Northern Europe, has a bad relationship with alcohol and it’s about drinking culture more than price.

If you keep hiking the price, people aren’t going to stop drinking, they’ll just drink bad quality drinks at higher prices or will spend more money.

It’s not like smoking, which is generally frowned upon and seen as a bad habit these days. It’s a big part of our social culture.

My view of it is that we need to move towards things that curb binge drinking – getting rid of closing hours (pandemic aside), keeping the terraces that have evolved during the pandemic and trying to make the whole nightlife scene a bit more relaxed and chilled out would probably help a lot. I think things like setting strict closing hours just results in a lot of drinking to a target time.

However, you’re really looking at a problem that is deeply cultural and might be something that’s quite difficult / impossible to change, but you could definitely make some positive moves to make it a more pleasant, less binge driven experience.

  7. Really curious if we’ll see a spate of people ending up in A&E having gone blind after trying to distill their own poitín in a bath.

  8. Just guna take more drugs, better laugh, most of the time cheaper….
A lot more people probably are too.

  9. Thank god the price of weed has went down significantly over the last few years. Also good thing it’s illegal so the government don’t collect any taxes on it that could go towards things like education and healthcare. Good solid system and laws we have in this country.

  10. God bless those poor rich people who have to “dissincentivise” themselves from over-drinking with something other than tax. Poor feckers.

I’m sure this one will be the one where the homeless alcoholics of the nation say “nah it’s not viable anymore, I’m going back to KPMG.”

  11. so lads, what do you think about about going in together on the islands largest off license in Newry?

    We would make a fortune.
