I’m one of them! It’s hard to imagine the country not coming to a complete stand still in the next few weeks.
Fuck me that’s jumped high. At least schools close this week.
And yet no one seems to care, I still see many many people without masks indoors. Apathy will kill many this winter.
Edit: vaccines don’t negate the need for mask wearing, immunocompromised folk can still die even with vaccines, bed blocking will kill non-covid patients.
The replies to this are a reminders that no matter how much info is out there, it’s not getting through to everyone.
World beating Omicron case numbers – always 1 step ahead
78,000 new cases, compared to 59,000 yesterday and 51,000 on the same day last week. This is the first day of seeing an impact from Omicron, goodness knows what we’ll see next week. By the way, the official case numbers **do not include reinfections**, if you’ve had Covid before your new case does not show up in the daily total. Previously this didn’t make a big difference but with the emergence of Omicron, where reinfection is much more likely, we really need to change this.
Only positive is the booster push is having a significant impact, with 650,000 given yesterday. Our previous best was 500,000. (Well short of the target but a worthwhile increase, we’ll see how it tracks over the next few days.)
What truly matters is hospitalisation numbers. We’ll get the earliest indication of how much impact Omicron is going to have by looking at London, where it makes up the highest proportion of cases. Hospitalisations lag behind case numbers as it takes time for people to get sick, it will be a few more days before we start to get an idea of how this is going to go. (Today’s case numbers for London are 19,000, compared to 7,000 this time last week.)
5pm Press Conference by Boris. Fuck sake don’t you do it fat boy…
He has fucked things up again!
He is treating COVID the way I treat a dropped fizzy drink;
Open it up a little to let it get all agitated, let it rise. Then when it overflows, wash all the sticky blood off my hands and carry on giving fat contracts to my mates.
The recent yougov polling for covid restrictions is interesting. It looks like on the whole the majority still support the restrictions, which is surprising to me. Will people really tolerate another period of tier 4 or lockdown?
We haven’t yet broken the record by specimen date but it can’t be far away.
>The UK has reported the record number of daily Covid-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, with 78,610 new cases on Wednesday.
Be wary this figure has too much to do with omicron, as:
Is it reckless/careless of me to go to the Arsenal game tonight, considering what’s going on?
(insert joke about going to watch Arsenal being damaging to your health)
Currently the entire EU and the US is watching the UK’s hospitalisation numbers and crossing their fingers.
If ICU rates stay the same as they were for delta, then we could all be a bit fucked.
It’s kind of beautiful that we all infect each other so much, getting up in each other’s faces and all.
What was the increase in testing, out of interest?
Today was the last day to get a positive result (after a test yesterday) and avoid isolating through christmas – definitely a factor
I’m in a group chat of 15 people and we’ve all tested positive in the last few days except for one
EDIT – I swear to god, as I was typing this the last domino fell via text. 100% positivity rate since Monday 😅
Edit again: we don’t live together and we’ve seen each other occasionally over the past week, but no licking…
Hey guys, what’s the percentage of the UK total population whom are double vaccinated?
Is it more than 50%? Just trying to see if this is due to not as much of the population being fully vaccinated.
I hope this doesn’t interrupt Johnson’s holiday party this year.
Let’s look at the positives here, lots of people getting antibodies by getting the virus and also by getting the shot. Reports of milder symptoms. Much rather get this one than delta. If Omicron replaces delta then surely it’ll be better for the nhs.
So as per Whittys slide – the vast, vast majority of hospitalisations are unvaccinated across all age ranges. Surprise surprise! When will these nutters learn?
Edit: Literally a drain on our society
Honestly the numbers are not that big a surprise because pre-Omicron they were already up there, its just there was too much attention being given to the state of things in parts of Europe (i.e. Germany who we were not far behind at the time)
Hospital numbers though.. look how many unvaccinated compare to those who had it
Its not as straight forward as “my body my choice” when you catch this and end up in hospital because the consequences of that “choice” are people who have been cautious can’t access treatment when they need it because the trusts are overwhelmed.
The slogan looks like the briefing room is having a closing down sale
But no further restrictions. Just a bit of scare mongering to scare people, but no hint of support for all the businesses announcements like this will devastate.
So listening to Boris and co, nothing changing this week, get the booster, please stop talking about the parties here, please stop talking about the parties here, please stop talking about the parties here.
Ah fuck. I’ve just cancelled my flats Christmas dinner reservation. We’ll do something inside I guess. I’m 26 in London and sooo many people my age have it right now it’s unreal. I did get my booster yesterday and saw Prince Charles, so that’s a plus.
I know this is parroted so much, but if this puts pressure on the NHS, it’s something we should all be concerned with. I genuinely think people don’t have good enough imaginations to fully consider what that looks like until it’s too late. It means having a heart attack and dying because an ambulance couldn’t get to you in time. Of suffering through a burst appendix longer than you have to because it takes so long to triage and get you in. A missed scan that could’ve caught your cancer before it spread… like, christ. Whether you think it’s a “bad cold” or the end of the world, we can’t deny that it causes strain on a service we will all need at some point or another.
*That’s* what the restrictions are about.
Ha Nikki Kanani letting her kids know via a press conference they will be cutting back on Christmas activities
Im waiting for a PCR result which im 100% sure will be positive. I had my 2nd jab in May but when i went for my booster earlier this month i was turned away for being too young, even though I’d followed the link on the message I was sent to book it. I’m a bit worried that my vaccines were so long ago that they might not help much – can anyone reassure me please? Im 28M and generally healthy except I have IBS.
I’ve tested positive too – was due to take the missus out for her birthday tomorrow but there we are. Luckily my family are fine. I’m all good for the time being, this just feels like a heavy cold.
It’s currently absurd. I’m not exaggerating at all when I say that 75+% of people that I know in London either have covid or have a suspiciously similar to covid illness that lateral flow tests aren’t picking up as covid. Everybody is ill.
I’m starting to think these figures are pretty meaningless without an indicator of number of tests taken…
Didn’t they say to do more testing the other day, and now the figures skyrocket by like 30%+ in a day.
If it’s so transmissible then everyone will get it, thus meaning herd immunity is finally developed until another variant comes along.
Most of my friend groups have all caught covid (London here)
It’s quite something. Not sure if I want to go out to be honest.
My partner has just tested positive for the second time. I am negative again despite us not social distancing – he seems to be alright, he seems to have more of a cold than it was last time. Last time he was exhausted and did not get up for 4 days.

>[27 November 2021](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/first-uk-cases-of-omicron-variant-identified): Two cases of COVID-19 with mutations consistent with B.1.1.529 identified in the UK
Delta cases were [already building up rapidly](https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/) in the last few weeks.

While a record in reported terms, worth noting Cambridge University estimates that infections were half a million at peak (back when there was no testing): https://www.mrc-bsu.cam.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Picture1-1-883×350.png
