Lots of security have always turned a blind eye. You think they want a confrontation, form filling, calling the police over someone else’s property?
These people won’t be stealing high ticket items to sell down the pub, they will be taking essentials and only what they need to get by. It might not be moral but crime always rises during times of poverty and the cost of living crisis will be no different. The government and companies might complain about people resorting to this but they are also the ones with the power to stop it in the first place. They just need to make it so that work pays people enough to not resort to stealing the basics to survive. It’s not that hard to solve but it will require the rich to give up some of their money to keep crime down. Whether they can make that sacrifice remains to be seen.
>Would people really be stealing baby milk if they didn’t have to?
Yes, it’s a very popular item to steal and sell on. The vast majority of shoplifters are easy to spot and *not* doing it to get essentials for survival.
It’s super cool that we’re at the “discussing the morality of stealing to not die” stage of liberal capitalism, and it can get so much worse. What is our obsession with this globally destructive system that pumps out odious individuals like Johnson, Mogg and Trump and exploits the crap out of anyone who just wants to do a day’s work for a decent standard of existence?
i wont pretend i read this, but my friend is a store manager in a budget chain and he says they pretty much dont bother unless its larger priced items. its all priced in eventually anyway he says but he sure as heck wont go after anyone stealing himself as he says its not worth the risk to himself or staff in general.
I was in a supermarket before Christmas and the security guard didn’t just turn a blind eye, he was chatting to the shoplifter whilst he was scanning the food through the checkout, and blatantly not scanning several items and putting them directly into his trolly rather than the packing area.
Some government ministers have turned a blind eye to people stealing public money, so why not? What’s good for the goose etc…
Supermarkets could combat shoplifting by not taking the absolute piss with outrageous price rises.
