London remains world’s most congested city, report finds

  1. …when they go on the telly and talk about the low productivity of british workers…remind them “Drivers in the capital spent an average of 156 hours waiting in traffic during 2022”

  2. What happens when you don’t invest properly in public transit infrastructure. Just take the CARS project something that would cost under a billion pounds and would improve rail services to London and the south 15million people. Would easily make back its money many times over would result in more capacity and faster journeys removing the single biggest bottleneck on UK rail but it still can’t get the go ahead in the current political climate.

  3. I’m sorry but I’ve to say I’m extremely skeptical about this study. Was it only Western countries? Because there’s no way London is more congested than Bangalore, Mumbai or Delhi.

Source: Living in London for a year now, lived in Bangalore for 8, visited Mumbai and Delhi multiple times

  4. More than a third of car trips made by Londoners could be walked in under 25 minutes (~1.5 miles), and two thirds could be cycled in under 20 minutes (~3 miles).

BuT tHe WeAtHeR aNd ThE hIlLs!!

Less cars, more public transport, walking and cycling. It’s literally the only route that works.

  5. Shouldn’t the number of people stuck in traffic be more relevant than the amount of hours people are stuck in traffic? Especially given that only 27% of people in London (68% UK average) commute by car.

I would say the methodology is a bit odd but then you see who commissioned the report and that they blame the congestion on bike lane installation…

  6. That’s probably because all the money they have taken from congestion charge over the years hasn’t been reinvested into the road and rail network ( oooh look shiny new cycle path talk about bang for buck).

  7. I realised during lockdown just how fast you can get around central London on a cycle. I hardly ever drive the car here now and never drive it into or though the centre of London at all.

  8. That list is quite crazy. Mexico City (Im in it now) definitely has congestion and used to be worst in the world but they have done alot to improve it and now it sits 3 sports north in that table to Bristol. WTAF is going on in England to see a stat like that?!

Birmingham is worse than Quito in Ecuador. Sure not?

Most annoying traffic Ive been in by a mile is Bogota. Good to see that made top ten. Well done Colombia!

  9. A lot of it is down to poor timing of lights at certain junctions across the river.

The is a massive drop in traffic in london since the lockdowns.
But its taking mind bogglingly longer getting around london. If they fixed this issue at places like tower bridge by tooley st and the mad light at the junction of borough High st and a3200. Sorted the bricklayers roundabout. Most of the congestion in se london, often going to the one way system that gets grid locked at new cross. Would melt away and South east london would be a breeze to zip around.

Locally in southwark a large number of side roads have blocked with objects like planters. Which has made for far smellier exhaust fumes on side streets which would only formally only be unpleasant on main arterial roads.

  10. The London and the South-East region is just about one of the most densely populated regions in the world. More so than even Uttar Pradesh, the most densely populated region of India. It makes sense that roads and hospitals will feel the impact…
