Hi from Serbia, I saw this documentary about 1821 revolution and role of arvanites (?) and other ethnic groups and creation of modern greek identity.

It looks pretty much antigreek, so I would like to hear some opinion about it.

P.S Who are Arvanites exactly?

  1. The documentary isn’t anti Greek, but the translator (and video poster) seems unprepared and biased toward a pro-Albanian message. For example:

    * *”the arrival of the Albanians in Morea(Peloponnese) during the 14th century”* becomes *”the achievement of the Albanians in the north to the 14th century”*

    * *”and respectively the Turks committed appalling atrocities elsewhere”* becomes *”and the Turks did those things in other countries”*.

For a little bit of context, this is the eighth and, I think, final episode of a series that tried to add nuance to the public historical view of the revolution by debunking some popular myths. As such the target audience were Greeks with some misconceptions about history that they were taught in school. There are mainstream academics in this documentary.

Unfortunately, trying to add nuance to complicated topics can be abused by someone not acting in good faith.
