I’ve been using an insulin pump and a cgm solution for a few years now and it truly is life-changing.
Initially I was running with a sensor that couldn’t communicate directly with my pump but about 6 months ago I switched to the I’ve that’s spotted and holy crap, it’s amazing.
This pump and cgm combo I’ve gone with can detect that I’m starting to go high, so can increase my background dose by a little to try to bring me back into target range, or see me thing too high too fast and give a bigger dose to bring me back into line, or the opposite, reduce the size of in starting to drop or just stop of I’m in danger of going to dangerously low levels.
The load off of your mind when you no longer need to think about the effect that everything you might do has on your blood sugar level has also seriously improved my general health as well. Seriously, if you or a loved are type 1 all about pumps and cgms! If you’re in Scotland it is already easier to get access to all of this stuff, as the article says. Even if you’re in England though, if you’re willing to do a little bit of work and select your pump will you can even make your own closed loop system using open source software.
>The technology currently costs nearly £6,000 a year but NICE says it wants to agree a price for the NHS that “is fair to taxpayers”.
Problem is it costs about x10 what a years worth of insulin would cost the NHS.
This is the problem the cash-strapped NHS has at the moment, damned if they do (because of the additional cost), damned if they don’t (because this transforms lives).
