Whilst there are clearly some GPs who are struggling, some *are* just still using excuses.
Our GP has the same number of Doctors, roughly the same number of patients (there hasn’t been an influx of people moving here), and yet we’ve gone from getting a same/next day appointment before the pandemic (joys of a small village!) to “we’ll call you back next Thursday”.
Every single time you step foot in the surgery, it’s empty. Their response if you need something sooner? Call 111 or go to A&E.
The way GP surgeries are contracted to the NHS massively muddies the water on this issue. I’m lucky to be with a surgery run by old school GPs and a practice nurse who work their backsides off to help everyone as best they can with what they have and you can see they’re knackered but still cheerfully powering through. Nearby there is another surgery who are widely known to be absolute bastards just milking the partnership for everything they can get with their “additional business activities” to the point there are all sorts of murmurings about major fraud and embezzlement taking place. It’s not a clear cut issue.
Fuck knows what’s happening round here. A&E is rammed, and the pharmacy attached to the GP is overwhelmed and has hour-long queues.
GP phone lines have a queue of 30 people and their online access tool has crashed, but the waiting room is empty and people can just walk in to make appointments.
And yet…
I had to wait ages on the phone to get through to my GP to get an appointment two or three hours later, but they said “I’m just glad to see someone in person for once and have a chat, because nobody seems to want to come down anymore.” My non-urgent 10-minute slot turned into a 25-minute one, and I got referred to a specialist for a separate issue within the week.
I really just don’t get where everyone is going and why they’re all phoning up but not getting appointments. Is it elderly people and social care that’s overwhelmed?

It’d help if they remembered the Equality Act applies to them and stopped the nonsense of demanding people ring up at 8am, offering a call back from a withheld number at an unknown time and getting pissy when that doesn’t work for people. I’ve taken to just turning up to book appointments and reminding the receptionists of my legal right to a reasonable adjustment and that if they want to refuse my request for a reasonable adjustment, I need a signed, detailed letter explaining the legal basis for refusing my request and the alternative offered, accounting for my disability and my right to independence. Plus a second copy to give to my solicitor.
This is the only way I’ve found to get them to acknowledge that my request for face to face appointments only, without telephone triage first, is a reasonable and achievable request.
I walked to my GP which was empty and they told me to go home and call. I insisted to be put on the waiting list there and then, to which they agreed. After 30mins I asked them to check and I was not on any list. The doctor had removed me herself. I made a fuss and she eventually saw me but said that I should have gone to A&E (among other racist comments). I’m European. The practice published salaries on its website as required by the law, the lady made £110k last year.
The UK has brought this upon itself. It’s like being at war. Standards for everything are below the drains.
