Motorists may be encouraged to film and report bad driving

  1. Huge investment in some new I.T. systems and laws. Sure there’s nothing else to spend it on, like more garda presence and enforcement.

  2. Anything that doesn’t involve trying to pin down whatever unlucky Garda was assigned to the case, and then does mostly SFA is to be welcomed.

This is a no-brainer – the videos get filtered by a civilian team first, then handed over to a dedicated police team to prosecute – very successful in the UK: https://www.nextbase.com/en-gb/national-dash-cam-safety-portal/

They’ve been doing this [for years](https://twitter.com/metpoliceuk/status/1169907478655426560?lang=en)

  3. This is a really really bad idea. There was a thread on boards where people would post dashcam footage and the way it’s cut makes a huge difference. A lot of the time people would piss others off, then just post the clip where the other driver reacts. It tends to be primarily made of really militant nuts (like the cyclist’s on tiktok with a head cam on the bike going around looking for trouble).

I’d be for it if they must post the 5 mins before and after.

  4. The Germans have this the right way around. They have very tight laws on what Dashcam footage can be used for and we should be looking to copy them.

What would be better is the Gardaí doing their job and following up on reported crimes and answering 999 not turning every citizen into a snitch.

  5. We’re turning into a nation of authoritarian busybodies. You can rat on your neighbour for anything now, from having a nice car to driving it dangerously to doing nixers for cash. When did we abandon the concept of minding our own business?

  6. I recall there being something a while back about if you had a dashcam you had certain obligations under GDPR>? Basically you were your own DPO or something? I’m fairly sure that would be brought up at some stage?

  7. This is McCarthyism. The speed at which fascism is being promoted by the government and gobbled up is alarming.

There’s a reason Gardaí are supposed to be trained to do this and why we don’t resort to vigilantism.

Here’s a funny example of this dystopian idea of the people reporting on the people:

The ridiculous idea is also a critical part in the oppressive society described in George Orwell’s 1984 where the children are used to report on misdemeanors of their parents and their friends leaving them with a life of guilt and a bigger divide between old and young to prevent dissemination of free thinking.
