Russian gas will eventually return to Europe, Qatari energy minister says, as nations “forgive and forget”

  1. Why would they do that after building all the infrastructure and becoming independent from it? What else? Qatari minister? Are we going to start sending children to coal mines next? Please tell us since you know so much about Europe.

  2. At the end of the day, realpolitik and national/supranational interests *always* prevail. Cynical as it may sound, by the end of the decade even this war will be history and, at least in the countries not directly involved, everything else will be business as usual.

  3. Under the Green New Deal etc the EU has to cut oil & gas by 55% by 2030.

With ~40% coming from Russia, this is the first installment. We’re not going back to Russian gas, we’re moving off gas.

  4. Nah. This will be in the history books just like WWII. Never forgotten, never truly forgiven.

And of course we can and will trade again sometime in the very far away future when Russia has a new and truly democratic government that doesn’t start wars, suppresses, abducts, tortures or kills innocents because they feel like it. You don’t need a crystal ball to know that.

  5. Well, Russia never stopped selling gas to Europe, volumes were reduced but never to zero. Remember that the EU never sanctioned natural gas so it is really on Russia to determine how much natural gas they sell to Europe.

That said, in the longer term, the “green economy” will transform Europe. So far it has mainly come for coal and nuclear but it will come for natural gas as well.

  6. If Social Democrats in Germany gets to decide, Europe will return to Russian energy independence unfortunately.

The only way to combat this is by Nuclear power. And there need to be more sensible leaders in Europe.

  7. Depends on how soon.

The great climate prophet Putin is ensuring Europe is on a path away from black and might never go back.

  8. The declaration reads like the Qatari energy minister wishful thinking that Qatar’s corruption scandal won’t have an impact on Qatar’s future deals just because Qatar owns oil wells.

  9. Russia ruined its reputation as a reliable supplier though. Germany could always count on the Soviet Union to deliver. This has changed with Russia. That sort of trust can probably not be regained again before the EU moves away from fossil fuels

  10. What do they mean by saying: ‘forgive and forget’?
They want us to accept the ruthless and inhumane war crimes in the country of Ukraine? It is not a ‘conflict’ nor so called ‘invasion’ – it is a full scale war that involves Russian modern military forces to bombard and destroy the most important cities of Ukraine and killing the civilians.

Do they want us to accept the fact that Ukraine ceased to exist and the best what we can do is to forget?

  11. Let’s return the Russians to Russia first and then still Europe may have actually learned to be self proficient.

  12. Gas use in The Netherlands dropped by 28% YoY already. Everyone I know is looking for ways to reduce their gas usage. The percentage would have been a lot higher if we didn’t have waiting lists for many types of insulation and for things like solar panels and heat pumps.

Personally I haven’t used any gas for the last 5 years.

I think the Qatari energy minister is missing the huge ass writing on the wall.

  13. It’s true. Many countries traded with Germany even during WW2 for many resources.

This will happen with Russia in the future too. Countries have to primarily take care of their people, economics and prosperity. I know ppl here are 90% activists, who don’t understand that but it is what it is.
