Farming: Union anger over plans for big licence fee rises

  1. It’s a big increase for sure. Yet what is shows is how much the taxpayer has been subsiding farming businesses up to now. NRW need their licensing system to recover its costs, so it’s only fair that those seeking such permits cover the true cost of them.

  2. hopefully the licensing system may go some way to dissuade farmers from poor environmental practices.

We need farming but it is currently the source of a considerable amount of environmental damage and this desperately needs to change.

  3. Farming needs to be reformed. We very clearly need it, we also need cheap food. Subsidies right now fill that void.

But also we need a broader look at paying farmers and rural communities for ecosystem services. It’ll be expensive for businesses, consumers and taxpayers but the potential for cash flows and environmental repair in rural areas is significant. Also it is just.

  4. I’m sure farmers aren’t happy, but this is just another example of how we’ve been subsidising them for years and how poor land management and ecologically poor practices have become the norm in the farming industry where it’s cheaper to just dump the shit they don’t need, which eventually ends up in the water table and in run off, than plan and manage waste accordingly.
