‘B**ch’, ‘Tramp’, ‘W**re’, ‘I’m going to kill you’: Women politicians reveal abuse plaguing Irish politics

  1. Anyone who takes time out of their day to write shite like that to anyone; women or men; politicians or not; would want to take a long hard look at themselves. What went wrong in their lives to think, you know what will make the world a better place, I’ll start abusing people and threatening to kill them in writing. I wonder if they walk around in the normal lives screaming that abuse at everyone or is it only through the armour of anonymity that their behavior occurs.
Disagree with people all you want and use the channels open to everyone to deal with issues you want addressed. Acting like a demented headcase and scaring people isn’t going to implement whatever change you were after.

  2. AITA for wanting Social Media’s to require I.D to use their platform?

It’s so easy for people to post under an alias these days, you see it happening all the time whether its Racist, Homophobic or Sexual Threats.
I understand they can still be traced with a police investigation but this happens so often I don’t think the resources are there for everybody who has to deal with this abuse.

  3. It’s not a thing that’s unique to irish politics. As I understand it, it’s politics in general. Anti-feminists aren’t able to restrict themselves when facing the idea of female authority.

  4. Jennifer Carroll MacNeill has had not one, but two stalkers/harassers in the last two years alone. Both of them sent her communications suggesting they wanted to rape her, one of which was on Christmas Day 2020. Instead of enjoying the day with her family, she has to have the thought of someone jumping her in a back alley hanging over her.

Regina Doherty has said she’s afraid to meet constituents outside of a public place like a café, where others can see them. For trying to do the safe thing, some people then try and turn it into “She thinks she’s too good to go to people’s homes”.

  5. I don’t think I’d rank “bitch” as being as bad as “tramp” or “whore”. It’s the equivalent of calling a male politician a dick. That being said, there are some deranged people taking it way too far.

  6. Stephen Donnelly, Darragh O’Brien get constant abuse on a daily basis and no one gives a shite. I don’t give a shite btw, I’m just out for equality. No place for death threats obviously but being called a bitch or tramp is no worse than what Leo etc get called.

  7. Anyone who thinks this isn’t uniquely bad for women, and particularly young women, is living in fairy land. It seems that every single post on instagram of a female public figure is met with vitriol and hatred. Veering off topic slightly, but even videos of girls innocently having fun in a bar are flooded with comments about “fatherless behaviour”, “she’s for the streets”, stupid American and UK memes that young lads pick up. A big part of the problem is these men making these nasty comments subconsciously see all women as objects to be fucked. If they displease them in that context, they let their subconscious anger become real and spout it off at these innocent women.

It’s actually so vile to see men commenting on TikTok videos of girls in their 20s or even their teens discussing their genitals or how they’d like to violently have sex with these girls. Just right there for the world to see, completely emboldened by the lack of pushback from other lads.

And then this political hate is linked to the anger these internet weirdos feel that a woman dares to be attractive, dares to tell them they’re wrong, has the nerve to put themselves in a public facing role. It’s just pure sexism or misogyny, it’s a huge problem, and any lads downplaying it are a part of that problem.

Edit: if you disagree with me, please tell me instead of just downvoting as people have been. I’d like to explain how I went from being on the other side of this to understanding why my behaviour was wrong.

  8. Someone I went to college with ran for election, she is one of the most steady people I know, down to earth, people would probably describe her as boring/dependable. I couldn’t vote for her because I live the next area over (constituency? area?) so I sent her a message to wish her good luck.
She sent me back a thank you message and I asked how it was going, she said that she got ten messages that day and my one was the only nice one. Over a few messages she told me just how bad it was, screenshots of the worst stuff, sexual, threats, all that. She hadn’t even been elected (she didn’t get a seat) and what she was getting was unreal. There was a lot of stories going around about her too and none of it was true, some might have been from people trying to get other candidates elected but it was much worse than anything being said about the men running. I’m normally one for anonymity online but I’ve never been on the receiving end of this and if I was I might change my mind after just a few days
