Would you support South Dublin golf courses offering the Government portions of their vastly underutilised land – to help temporarily house refugees in prefabs and mobile homes until this temporary crisis comes to an end ?

No.
What about all the soccer pitches, tennis courts etc etc
No, not because I give a shit about golf. Because we still need green recreational areas regardless of their use case

All I want for Christmas is a direct provision centre for Dalkey.
Ah yes, of course it’s golf. Nothing liking riling up people who have a hate boner for the sport
It’s easy to be generous with other people’s property.
City full of 1 and 2 story housing decides the only solution is to spread out even more. God forbid it builds up.
Do they support it? Otherwise it’s just stealing private land and in that case, what’s stopping them taking your (or my) home for the same purpose? Stupid take OP.
I most definitely wouldn’t support this. Who would suggest such a ridiculous plan.
If we don’t have space for refugees then maybe we should be rethinking our policies and not just open the door for a free for all.
Hard to take such a leading question as a serious attempt at gauging opinion!
Caravans in Bonos back garden please.
“Temporary”
This is a pure fever dream from a looper.
Fairly weak straw man there.
Why stop at golf courses. What about horse racing? Could CPO leopardstown and get 2 for 1. Racetrack and golf course BOOM! Could squeeze 50 nice detached houses and 10 semi D’s for social. Love this thread!
No.
God i need to unfollow r/ireland. It just depresses me
The problem with Ireland is that temporary all too often becomes permanent when it comes to these things.
Direct provision was supposed to be a temporary measure
OP is leading with title, bad form.
Sport is wasteful by definition, as it’s for sport and not necessary.
With his logic all sports would be disbanded and that would be very bad.
“until this temporary crisis comes to an end ?”
What makes you think this is ever going to end? These migration treaties that our politicians were happy to sign us up for with the UN and EU means this will never end. And now that they’re gaslighting us about “Climate Refugees” means people can come here as refugees for any reason.
Ah yes, let’s destroy some of the cities last green spaces used for recreation by tens of thousands of people for a few hundred houses instead of building up or using the available completly unutilised space in the city……….fucking genius /s
😂😂 temporary crisis. Brilliant
No. Plenty of space outside the M50
What makes you think it’s a temporary crisis?
No.
And I hate golf
Oh. My. God. This nonsense again.
Golf courses get zoned as golf courses _specifically_ because they’re 100% unsuitable for literally any kind of building on.
They’re swampy. They’re marshy. Shit sinks into them.
There is, shockingly, more to building than looking at google maps and thinking, “hey, here’s some green space, why not put 200 families here?”
*Because their houses will sink and ruin their lives.*
I’m basically a Bolshevik on housing. If it were up to me, we’d corral all the NIMBYs into a chain gang and force them to build houses at gunpoint.
But 99% of the suggestions, and “facts”, that get posted in this sub are either badly misinformed, or specifically designed to gin people up.
I have an above average salary and an apartment with a balcony.
The government could put a tent on my balcony.
Or they could use a field somewhere that isn’t a golf course. You know… a field with cows in it where the cows are old.
No … make sure you can provide adequate accommodation for the poor souls before you invite them to stay.
Imagine I invite quests and when they arrive I escort them to a tent at my garden. That’s just no way to treat people.
What about permanently housing Irish people in actual houses
Not even from Dublin but why all these strategic plans when it comes to refugees? What’s the big push for them?
No I wouldn’t and I don’t play golf. There is plenty of unused land in Dublin where they could build temporary or permanent accommodation. These golf clubs are owned by their members, you can’t just commandeer them, we don’t live in China.
No.
It’s funny the perceptions some people have about golf, as if only billionaires play it..
How about we get rid of everything recreational and everything that brings any form of culture to the country and replace it with housing for Ukrainian asylum seekers from Georgia, Algeria and Nigeria?
Some find that was once thought of as temporary is actually permanent
No, because I remember the prefabs in primary school which became permanent after a few years. Also, in a realistic sense, prefabs would absolutely fuck up a perfectly manicured golf course (not sight wise, surely it’ll fuck up the land and people need hobbies nowadays)
The “temporary” prefabs that my school put in during my first year were still there when I graduated and there was no ground broken for new class rooms. There’s no such thing as temporary in this country.
The problem is that this isn’t gonna be “temporary”. It will become permanent. Build apartments (build up not outwards) and house people who buy them and then a select few refugees inside them as well.
No
No, they’d eat all the magic mushrooms.
No. Golf clubs are not efficient, but they’re a major quality of life factor. Build up and staff security and maintenance seems more logical.
When it comes to government, nothing is ever temporary.
This is the sort of shite you’d near expect to see on r/Ireland at the moment. Fuck me OP take a break lad haha.
No ❤️
Just being a devils advocate here(and not smart), but what’s the logic of choosing golf courses? They’ve paid for that land. Is it only because if the perception that they serve the meddle/upper class?
Why not place them in public parks? Or in a farmers field? At the sides of GAA clubs? Or why not place it everyone’s back garden? None of that land is being fully utilised.
I don’t take issue with finding a solution to this issue, but attacking private owned land instead of the government who are the stewards of these refugees sets a very dangerous precedent.
Thank fuck Killiney golf course didn’t make the list
We need to build up. There needs to be skyscrapers. I don’t care how ugly they are, we need Commie blocks.
Better idea: why not stop propping up this country’s unprofitable dog tracks with millions in public money? Imagine how many mid-rise housing units you could build instead of Shelbourne Park.
Yes and no, taking a golf club or two away will help, but it will also help having good roads or relaying public transport outside Dublin.
Removing all golf clubs from Dublin may fix 1/2thousand accomodation issues, but then we will be in the same situation.
Make good roads and good communication with the main cities and you will potentially fix the majority of the accomodation issues.
Appart from that, golf clubs are private, so I don’t think they will sell cheap
