Train drivers to go on strike in February

  1. Excerpt:

    >Train drivers are to strike on 1 and 3 February after union bosses rejected a pay offer from rail companies.

    >Drivers had been offered a 4% pay rise for two years in a row earlier this month in a bid to end a long-running dispute over pay and conditions.

    >But the deal hinged on changes to working practices.

    >Aslef said the proposal was “not and could not ever be acceptable”, but its general secretary Mick Whelan said the union was open to further talks.

    >”Not only is the offer a real-terms pay cut, with inflation running north of 10%, but it came with so many conditions attached that it was clearly unacceptable. They want to rip up our terms and conditions in return for a real-terms pay cut,” he said.

  2. How is it so hard to give them what they want?! I totally support the striking workers and especially think the plan to cut preventative maintenance by 50odd % is fucking wild.
But I’m so tired of spending 4 hours a day on freezing cold busses just to get to work and back. The only people really feeling the affects of these strikes are the workers who don’t have the luxury of working from home, it’s bullshit.

  3. Well I’m fucked for getting to the airport then. Please just give them what they want or my rare time with my partner is cancelled

  4. just sack them all ffs, don’t the bosses realise there’s millions who would love to earn £60,000 a year. There is no labour shortage for train drivers.

  5. Fun fact: many train drivers get paid more than many doctors.

Nurses, police, fire brigade, teachers, ect. are the ones that deserve more money. Not the people who sit around saying “mind the gap” all day (when they’re not on strike) getting £65k

  6. And already here come the scabs and government apologists to tell us that train drivers should just be happy with what they have, or they should all be sacked and replaced, or how they’ll be late for work so they should just cut it out.

The government could end the strikes with the stroke of a pen for a pitiful amount of money compared to how much these companies make. They could end doctors strikes, end the shocking underfunding of the NHS, end the wholesale gutting of all our public services, but they won’t because they believe it isn’t the government’s job to take care of people. We should all just be beholden to corporations and landlords and if inflation is 10% then we should accept a 4% raise, if conditions are poor we should shut up or be replaced by the next impoverished bastard too desperate to say no.

Is this really the sort of thing you want to make acceptable? Cause it’ll be your company and your job next if you aren’t already being shafted. Companies were willing to own slaves and enforce 80 hour work weeks and put 8 year olds down the mines before all of those were made illegal. They would *gladly* do the same to you without a second’s hesitation were they allowed to, there is no bottom to these people.
